Summary
New York Times Audio best seller | Amazon Editor's pick | Audible Editor's pick
After more than 500 years of exile, the heir to the empyre is wary about his sudden reassignment to active duty on the Goblin War’s front lines. His mission to rescue an outpost leads to a dead-end canyon deep inside enemy territory, and his suspicion turns to dread when he discovers the stronghold doesn't exist. But whoever went to the trouble of planning his death to look like a casualty of war didn't know he would be assigned to the Seventh Sikaria Auxiliary Squadron. In the depths of an unforgiving jungle, a legend is about to be born, and the world of Elan will never be the same.
From Michael J. Sullivan, the New York Times, USA Today, and Washington Post best-selling author, a new adventure begins with the first book in The Rise and Fall trilogy. Although this series is set in the same world as the Riyria novels and the Legends of the First Empire books, it is a stand-alone tale. As such, no prior knowledge of the other works is required to enjoy this tale to its fullest.

Another world building masterpiece
Having read all the other books in the Legends and Rhyria chronicles, this series starter does not disappoint. Slow to start as context setting for the series needs to be put in place. However the series catches pace and does not let up. Excellent narration as usual. Waiting to listen to the next 2 books

An Empire on the Edge - One of M.Sullivan's best!
From the dense jungles of the Empire's Edge to the majesty of Percepliquis Michael J. Sullivan's return to Elan is a stunning tour d'force, from both him and the narrator. Indeed this is one of the absolute best depictions of Half-Elves I have ever encountered, Nd the nuanced story will have you on the edge of your seat from minute one, alternately cheering and wide eyed in suspense.
With both clear and enjoyable introductions to this new era in Elan's history, and plenty of scattered Easter eggs for long time readers, Nolyn is a stellar read that is a must for lovers of High-fantasy!
lastly shout out to Michael and Robyn Sullivan for their wonderful Fore & After-words, and to the incredible Tim Gerard Reynolds who delivers another brilliant performance!

Loved it!
Loved the story, the characters and of course Tim is a brilliant narrator. The only thing i didn't like was the prologue and epilogue by the author and his wife, but thankfully you can just skip them. I think it diminishes the magic of a good story to hear what goes on behind the scenes, but others may find it interesting.

Don’t work as stand alone novels.
The author states at the that if you’re new to his work that’s fine because this series works as 3 stand alone novels. In short, they don’t. You can still enjoy the stories to an extent, but you’ll feel like you’re with a new group of friends listening to them reminisce and tell stories about years worth of parties, experiences and relationships you weren’t around for and have no knowledge of. This gets worse as the series progresses and is particularly frustrating in the third book. It’s a pity because the stories are pretty good and it’s an intriguing world. If the author hadn’t outright said that they work fine without knowledge of his other works I’d have probably read the others first. In my opinion he’s wrong and you should start elsewhere. Now I need to decide if I want to read his other work and try to untangle the threads or just move on.

Thoroughly captivating
This book has pulled me in right at the beginning, and kept my on my toes till the very end. The story was exciting, well thought through - I can see and appreciate how much work went into it's refinement -, and it was way less predictable than I've originally thought it will be. The narration also added a lot to the experience, Tim Jerard Raynolds' masterful impersonation of the characters was absolutely magnificent.
