Very good!

Well written and thought provoking—this collection does what the best of the genre does in taking on themes relevant to contemporary times and exploring them through novel means.

There’s only one other review on audible as I write this and, with no intended disrespect, I feel it needs addressing as I couldn’t disagree with the other reviewer more; I enjoyed and found merit in all the stories and the narration wasn’t flat at all, subtle, yes, but I prefer that to over-blown emoting.

If you like literary science fiction or speculative fiction, I’d suggest giving the sample a listen and as long as you get on ok with that, I expect you’ll like the book. I’m happy I took the chance on it and already plan to listen to it again in the future.

Worst Narration I’ve Ever Encountered

If you are reading this review and thinking about getting the audiobook of this collection of short stories - don’t buy the audiobook, it’s genuinely dreadful. Buy the book instead so you can actually enjoy it.

Ken Liu is a very talented writer and his stories here are fantastic, but the narration to his collection of short stories is so bad that I could no longer listen after struggling with the audiobook for three hours.

The narrator uses the same dreary monotone for the entire narration. She doesn’t make any attempt to differentiate between characters - making it difficult to follow the stories. It’s so bad that it’s even difficult to draw a distinction between where one story ends and a new one begins.

It’s as if the narrator didn’t want to be there. I just can’t explain it. She has ruined an excellent collection of short stories.

Buy the book - the audio version is un-listenable.

The hidden quality and other stories

I Felt like the narrator just couldn't be bothered. The book had maybe 3 good stories in total and those were sadly the shortest ones
