In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighbourhood where Jewish immigrants and African Americans lived side by side through the 1920s and '30s.

In this novel about small-town secrets and the people who keep them, James McBride shows us that even in dark times, it is love and community - heaven and earth - that sustain us.

Enjoyable but somewhat of a flat ending

I really enjoyed the first 3/4th of the book, but felt that the ending was a bit flat. I guess that might be the disadvantage of more realistic, slice of life stories.

Beautiful

A touching story of human frailty and fragility and most of the love that shone through it.

The characters in this were fantastic - I felt I knew every one of them

After reading a few books recently where the endings have been disappointing, this was a joy

Couldn’t put it down

I loved so many of the characters. Chona with a heart of gold, Moshe who loved her so much, Nate Love who lived up to his name, the Jews who came to a land of hope and the blacks who came up north in the hope of escaping their chains only to find different chains.
I did get confused with some of the characters and their relationships but listened on and it all became clear.

Great book

The whole tale is very cinematic. I was picturing it as a movie the whole time. Trying to cast actors in various roles. A book that will stay with me, because I feel like I lived it. Excellent atmosphere. Unforgettable characters.

An unusual story about relationships.

So well told. All the characters came to life. So much variety of settings with wonderful descriptions.
