About this listen

Tor finds itself on the brink of turmoil as a god, who spends his days in the bottom of a pit, has decided that he would be better off wreaking havoc on the surface above, and is willing to use any means necessary to accomplish his goal.

Gloric, the God of Peace, knows that the only people who can stop this angry deity is a rag-tag group of heroes, consisting of a certain Hunter, a Mythical Theoremist prodigy, a robot that speaks only in word salad, a professional cult murderer, a sarcastic Ice Archer, and an ex-Messenger.

The Bearer of Bad News returns with answers to lingering questions, twice the satire, twice the fun, and, for some reason, a profuse amount of references to fish.

Baskerville Book Reviews

I’m not even sure how to process what I just listened to. It feels like an adventure story, where the characters just lack a goal or direction so they just wander aimlessly to see where they end up. Normally, this would annoy the hell out of me.

But in this instance, I waited too long to return to this series. The characters, their dialogue, and interactions are hilarious. I was constantly laughing at the shenanigans the protagonists got into as well as how they communicated. Hell, even the book narration (not the audio narrator) was fuckin’ hilarious.

I never really cared that the story didn’t seem in a hurry to go anywhere because there was always something interesting going on. I was probably 5 hours in (2.55x speed) before I even questioned what the hell the plot was about because I was having such a good time.

Aside from the narrator mispronouncing the word prescribed by saying “perscribed”; the narration was fantastic. It’s been too long since I had an excuse to complain about a narrator mispronouncing basic English words. I feel a little empty when all I have to say about the narration is “it’s good” and trying to find an interesting way to word that.

The characters all had unique voices to match their personalities. I could always tell who was who based on their voice, without the book needing to say “character name said”, like so many authors are fond of. This is one of those rare narrations where you almost forget you’re listening to somebody voice act every character. I kinda got lost in the adventure for a while. It was a fun time and a much needed break from reality.

Fantastic sequel!

After listening to the first book, this one manages to go far and behind it! The first one lay a great foundation while this one builds on it. The dry humour is there throughout - which I personally loved. We got some more depth to the main character and new intriguing characters alongside him. The story is more to the point and unfolds nicely. I really enjoyed it! At the start the say they wanted to make a sequel that is worth it and they hit every point along the way for me. I really enjoyed this one and it felt to me, to be written with more confidence than the first. I just want a book 3 now...

I've been trying to find the authors social media or anything to see if they plan a third book and I can't find anything! So I hope there's a third coming. There's still unanswered questions and this one doesn't feel like a conclusion to the series so I live in hope!

The narration is brilliant. Jake suits this book very well. Each character has their individuality under his care and the way he manipulates his voice to portray the sarcasm and confusion within the characters is brilliant. He did wonderful work here and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this.

I don't say this about every book I listen to but I look forward to making these two books of this series one of my first re-listens. I have a strong feeling ill appreciate them even more when I revisit them.
