Summary

“SOS Titanic to all ships. Sinking head down 41.46 N 50.14 W. Come as soon as possible.”

North Atlantic Ocean, 1912. Kate Royston is a witness to history as the RMS Carpathia responds to the Titanic’s desperate SOS. Kate plans to escape personal tragedy by fleeing to Europe, but everything changes when the Carpathia races to save the Titanic’s survivors.

Forced to return to New York, Kate abandons her hope of escape and becomes embroiled as a vital witness in the high-profile Senate investigation of the disaster.

Fueled by public rage and political infighting, the investigation becomes a witch hunt. Although Kate knows the truth she’s terrified that pitting her eyewitness account against ruthless, powerful men will leave her ruined. As she struggles to make a decision, her heart leads her to two men—a powerful lawman and a handsome young radio operator.

Can Kate find happiness in the midst of tragedy?

Meticulously researched and using actual witness testimony, The Girl on the Carpathia begins where most Titanic stories end and answers the questions “What happened next?” and "Who was to blame?"

The Girl on the Carpathia is a gripping stand-alone historical novel inspired by real events. If you like passionate characters, surprising revelations, and endearing romances, then you’ll love Eileen Enwright Hodgetts' seamless blend of fact and fiction.

Dramatic, compelling retelling of Titanic sinking

This is a good example of narrative non-fiction. The sinking of the Titanic (the "unsinkable" ship) on its maiden voyage to New York with enormous loss of life is told through various perspectives. These are clearly defined by location and person at chapter introduction. The narrative arc follows through the confusion and surprise of the sinking to the final resolution of attributing blame on formal inquiries in USA and UK. The main character is on the ship which rescues the survivors and has her own backstory which she is trying to evade.

I felt engaged with each stage of the story which ranged through machinations by wealthy and conflicted individuals, grief of significant individuals of power and influence and people of integrity and honour. There is peril and suspense in how our heroine is treated and her adventures (or misadventures). The intervention of the press is relevant and part of the dramatic elements. The legal and political elements are integral as well as highlighting the moral issues. My sentiments were swayed by the plight of those with lesser resources and status, but some of those with responsibility emerge with some credit.

There is a love story sub-plot which adds interest and motivation to characters. There is a bitter-sweet resolution despite the outcome being already known.

poor narration ruins an interesting take

An interesting novel though slow in places. However the narration is exceptionally poor. The vocal inflections and the lack of ability to confidently and accurately reflect the various accents, together with a stilted style make this a very difficult listen.
