About this listen
From the bestselling author of If Only I Could Tell You comes the story of two women determined to uncover the truth. But how can you trust the present if you can't remember the past?
“Left me gasping. Brilliant.”—Alex Michaelides
“Has one of the best story twists I have ever read…superb writing.”—Ruth Jones
“Resonates long after you turn the final page.”—Rosamund Lupton
When Anna Bradshaw wakes up in a hospital bed in London, she remembers nothing, not even her loving husband, Stephen. The doctors say her amnesia is to be expected, but Anna feels cut adrift from her entire life.
In Bristol, Livvy Nicholson is newly married to Dominic and eager to get back to work after six months’ maternity leave. But when Dominic’s estranged mother appears, making a series of unnerving claims, Livvy is sucked into a version of herself she doesn’t recognise.
A hundred miles apart, both women feel trapped and disorientated, and their stories are about to collide. Can they uncover the secret that connects them and reconstruct their fractured lives?

“Multiple perspectives and an intricate plot create an atmosphere of anxiety that crescendos to a climactic twist. Narrator Kristin Atherton gives an emotional portrayal of this eerie narrative, with an expressiveness that intensifies as the tension builds.”—Library Journal
“Beckerman’s tight, tense prose is fast paced and compulsive. You’ll tear through the pages until you get to a final killer twist.”—Daily Mirror
“A compelling, claustrophobic story…I finished it in one huge gulp, excusing myself unilaterally from any family responsibilities I was so desperate to finish it.”—The Observer

I enjoyed this
Good narration and I liked the story. The author appears to have had a thesaurus to hand throughout the book as she throws in long words ubiquitously, often when they aren’t needed or in context. I would recommend this book despite that.

Too many similes
Very long winded and over descriptive. Similes in every other sentence that became irritating. Easily guessed plot.
Would have been a good story without the authors obsession with lengthy descriptions and repetitive phrases. I found the main character annoying at times. She was supposed to be an educated woman in a highly respected job but couldn’t work out that her husband was a manipulator and accomplished liar.

Compelling but agonising
This is a well-written thriller, and it certainly grips and demands to be finished, but the experience of listening to it is borderline painful. The depiction of controlling, gaslighting abuse is so unbearable that I had to listen at 1.2, then 1.5x speed just to get through it. Otherwise it's decently constructed; nice clues encourage several different theories of what's going on along the way, and you figure out the twists a satisfying amount of time ahead of the reveals (without trying; I don't approach books looking for twists as I find it more enjoyable that way; probably if you're a twist-hunter you'd guess sooner).
The narrator's voice for men is a bit ridiculous-sounding at first, but you get used to it.

Intense
I had to stay up to finish. I’d figured some parts of the plot but didn’t ruin the book. Feel it needs a trigger warning though due to the DV.

Love a good plot twist.
I’m usually very good at guessing plot twists but must admit this one kept me guessing until the last minute.
Thought provoking.
A very good read.

Fantastic thought provoking and relevant
This captivated me from beginning to end. Well constructed and a reflection on modern life. Chilling in the messages about today’s society.
Best I’ve read for awhile.
