Summary

This tale begins in the year 1849, in a bedroom of a plantation house. A woman, the lady of the house, is in labor, and her unborn son, unbeknownst to all present but she, will be the first warlock gifted in the ways of the South to be born in over two hundred years. The child, Henry, along with his three older sisters—Josephine, Alma, and Marjorie—will, for reasons they will not learn of until several years after their mother’s murder, be considered by most of their kind as the four chosen to lead their people to a level of power and prosperity like the witches and warlocks have never known.

Part one of the five part fantasy adventure series centers around the Curran siblings and their journey, by wagon, from South Carolina to Oregon. With the aid of several valuable items their mother left buried for them in her secret place, the four siblings are constantly learning about their true identities as they travel America’s wondrous—and often dangerous—landscape. This is a journey of self-discovery during a time of great change.

Recommended to fans of witchcraft, epic fantasy, or something a little different.

Not really what I thought it would be.

The story was alright. There were quite a few parts that don't really have a reason to be in the story. I'm also not a huge fan of the narrator.

A journey through time

The 'Chronicles of the Last World: Part One' offers a unique blend of historical fiction and fantasy, taking listeners on a journey across the 19th century America. The narrative explores the development of the Curran siblings as they uncover the mysterious legacy left by their mother, years after her murder.

The author’s attention to detail in describing the era and landscape transports you back in time, immersing you in the historical setting. While I initially expected more focus on fantasy elements, the historical backdrop provides an intriguing context that fans of period pieces may find especially enjoyable.

Overall, The Chronicles of the Last World is recommended for those who appreciate a blend of historical fiction and fantasy, and I’m eager to see how the story unfolds in the subsequent parts of the series.
