Summary
Hamelin, a village separated from the rest of the world, has a deadly problem. Fierce, flying beasts ravage and cull the sparse human population, forcing Hamelins citizens to live within the safety of her boundaries. With no help in sight, the village leaders look to their god, the Provider, for salvation, and they unearth a chilling answer to their problem. The Tournament of the Kindred—a much-celebrated, barbaric event that pits four gladiators against each other in deadly combat.
Winning the Tournament brings rich rewards, fame, and glory to ones bloodline. Losing, however, results in a lethal trip to the Sacrificial Altar for you and all those who share your blood: man, woman, and child. The sacrifice is said to be a blood offering to the Provider for reprievea necessary evil for the greater good of all. Neven Oakfall, adolescent town historian and librarian, is chosen by random draw to fight for the survival of his bloodline.
After a life behind a desk, Neven must find the courage deep within himself to defeat his stronger opponents, for he discovers that much more than the lives of those he loves hangs in the balance. An evil lurks, waiting for its moment to deliver the death blow to the village, and Neven is all that stands in its way, whether he likes it or not.

Great read
This was a fun read. Loved the friendship and banter between Neven, Talpus, and Delgado (apologies if I spelled the names wrong). World building was great with some interesting concepts. And the narration was fantastic. Looking forward to the next book!

Wonderful.
I really enjoyed the story and the narrator. Unfortunately it seems the next book isn't out until next year. That being said, it's still worth a listen.

Not your average librarian
The story follows Neven a young librarian whos never really been anywhere or done anything, thinking his entire life is mapped out, but then one night everything changes and his life may be far more valuable than he ever could have imagined.
Enjoyable story with a nice fluid pace to it kept me engaged throughout, as the first of a series its setting the scene/world for us but the pace feels natural not too slow or too fast as it builds to the inevitable climax of events.
Character feel well written and given some depth without going overboard.
Narration was excellent capturing each character with distinct voices and tones etc
I look forward to book 2 when it comes out.

An addictive listen..
I found it really hard to stop listening! I was so invested in the characters and story. I can’t wait for the next book! It ended well, not on a cliffhanger as I feared it would.

A wonderful start which sadly falls into stereotypes later
Firstly. I enjoyed this audiobook. The narrator is excellent and the first act was extremely interesting and exciting. Sadly during the first act mention is made of an event which will clearly be the 'big third act set piece' and for all the attempts at world building in the second act I couldn't help but think "let's get a move on to the big third act event!".
Come the third act, come the big event and it was enjoyable but it also then triggered the character stereotypes which you could see coming but I was hoping we could avoid.
Now granted, this is only book one and there's chances that the character stereotypes won't pan out but sadly I'm not hopeful.
I'll start book two with fingers crossed and if you're a fan of fantasy and want a lighter Lord of the rings type vibe story then I can easily recommend this.

Familiar but still new.
I enjoy a good fantasy story. This is the first book in a trilogy. This is the part where we get to know parts of the background and the main characters (maybe). This story has all the signs of a classic fantasy story.
Something mysterious.
Some magick.
Characters who are not as they seem.
Fighting of course.
This is a story that has a good gallery of characters. The author takes his time in describing them, so they come more to life. The store has a nice pace to it.
There is something about a classic british narration to this type of story. For my it is a perfect match. This is a narrator that you can hear knows his craft. A very enjoyable listen. I am looking forward to the next book.

A dark fantasy with a gripping story
This is the first book of a trilogie that opens up a new world of fantasy. Filled with unique characters and beasts, you are drawn into this world where a young librarian is chosen to become a gladiator fight for his bloodline to survive. From the moment he is chosen he is faced with multiple challenges that lead you through this fantasy world.
The author gives the reader a great story to dive into. He leaves the reader wondering what will happen and on the edge. Definitely worth picking up if your looking for a fresh fantasy series! Can't wait for the next book!

An unlikely hero
I really loved this story. Introducing Nevan an unlikely hero forced into to fight as gladiator to protect his family and his village.
The world building and characters were really good and helped to capture my imagination.
I really liked the choice of narrator who really helped to flesh out the fantasy.
I’m looking forward to more titles from this author.
