Summary

AD 265 - In the shadow of Mount Etna, slaves are rising up. As the rebel leader declares Sicily the new land of the free, men and women are slaughtered and cities across the island are sacked and burned.

When a ship is wrecked off the island's west coast, all but two survivors are cut down in the surf by the rebel slaves. Ballista, an experienced Roman soldier, has always found a way to survive against the odds - but his son Marcus is still just a boy.

With the burning road stretching out ahead of them, father and son must cross the war-ravaged island in a race against time to save the rest of his family and somehow find a way to extinguish the brutal rebellion, before it all goes up in flames.

Great story. Disappointing narration.

This book is every bit as fantastic as all of its predecessors, but I wish they’d kept Nick Boulton as the narrator. His skill with accents really brought all the characters to life. By comparison, Rupert Bush appears not to bother with this, and it detracts from the listening experience somewhat.

Excellent story, but lacks accents

The Ballista series is excellent and this edition is a great listen with a compelling story. However the narration was lacking the accents differentiating characters from different regions, such as Ballista and Maximus, that we’re used to. Otherwise the narration is good. I highly recommend this book

narrator

where was nik boulton? I have all of ballistas' adventures in warrior of rome and throughly enjoyed, but this tale is spoilt by inane boring drawl that had me loosing concentration regularly, the story of father and son bonding and understanding each other within a wider slave uprising is very good but I couldn't listen again.

Duller than you would think

The story is pretty dull. Fight and flight then repeat several times. The characters never really come to life and the story limps along until the fighting and the book finishes.

Not one of his best

I very much enjoy the Ballista series but found this to have been the poorest offer thus far. I would make a plea to Auidible to try and keep the same narration for continuity reasons. previous narration has given Ballista a strong German accent bit in this offer he doesn't. it's like having Sean Bean swapped for Dominic Cummerbuch half way through a Sharp TV series. Arhhhhhbbb

Narration

I thought the narration was poor, giving Ballista a poor character. Maybe this is just my preference. Previous narrators have done a much better job.

Very disappointed

I struggled to listen to this audio book, normally I enjoy Harry Sidebottom but the narration was slow and lacked any emotion. I became so bored and frustrated that I returned the book, a first for me. I really love the Ballister series and was looking forward to a good listen. The narration spoiled this title, I plan to purchase the kindle version and will be avoiding Rupert Bush narration in future.

Sorry to say I feel let down.

Poor story, awful reading of it!
I think if I was Bernard C. I would want a share of the royalties!! Thats me finished with this author. His last 2 books have been poor.
