Summary

An Amazon Charts bestseller

From New York Times bestselling author Alice Hoffman comes a heartfelt short story about family, independence, and finding your place in the world.

Isabel Gibson has all but perfected the art of forgetting. She’s a New Yorker now, with nothing left to tie her to Brinkley’s Island, Maine. Her parents are gone, the family bookstore is all but bankrupt, and her sister, Sophie, will probably never speak to her again.

But when a mysterious letter arrives in her mailbox, Isabel feels herself drawn to the past. After years of fighting for her independence, she dreads the thought of going back to the island. What she finds there may forever alter her path—and change everything she thought she knew about her family, her home, and herself.

Critic reviews

“Jennifer Jill Araya brings the two sisters in Hoffman's short story to life. She projects the hurtful emotional baggage they've been carrying throughout 12 years of estrangement.”AudioFile Magazine

I loved it

This was a short but beautiful story that made for a refreshing change of pace between reading other books. It didn’t have the darker elements that I normally associate with Alice Hoffman but that wasn’t a bad thing.

Basic story brought alive

Touches of Alice Hoffman’s brilliance, but lacking overall. Narration saved this one from being quite simple, but a nice short listen.

I love Alice Hoffmans writing and this was a perfect little short story. I listened to it so just sat back, relaxed and let the words float over me.

Beautiful

A sweetheart of a story, which is thought provoking and brings a smile to your face on a number of occasion’s. You can imagine yourself living near the marsh in a quaint little home surrounded by natures best. The bookstore which has an addition, reading with a warm drink and cake is pure bliss. A short story that packed a lot in. I am already looking forward to the follow on in February 2025 xx thank you Alice for this treat of a read.

Can't believe this is a book

Very disappointed. This was closer to a highschoolers book review than an actual book. No substance to the story. The summarising of everything at the beginning seems fine as you think the story is going somewhere. but its as if someone is just telling you a summary of what happened on a TV show. I couldn't believe when it just ended.
