‘Amazing’ Meg Rosoff

‘Extraordinary’ Maggie Alderson

‘What some might call beauty, I find monstrous’

In the age of the Faerie Queene, Elizabeth I, Lord Francis Rodermere starts to lay waste to a forest.

Furious, the sorceress who dwells there scrawls a curse into the bark of the first oak he fells:

A faerie boy will be born to you whose beauty will be your death.

Ten years later, Lord Rodermere’s son, Beau is born – and all who encounter him are struck by his great beauty.

Meanwhile, many miles away in a London alchemist’s cellar lives Randa – a beast deemed too monstrous to see the light of day.

And so begins a timeless tale of love, tragedy and revenge…

A stunning retelling of Beauty and the Beast

the BEST fairy tale EVER...

this book had me from the very start, the narration of each character bringing them to life. for me, a little girl feathered and furred, epitomises that true beauty lies beneath.
the twists and turns, the beautiful language and vocabulary, the pace of narration, the blossoming of each character, the storyline taking me between reality and imagination.
I cannot recommend this book more highly, your in for a real treat...... I didn't want it to end.

Beautifully narrated grown up fairytale

An escape into an intriguing fantasy fairytale, set in a magical London of yore, where sorceresses and Shakespeare dwell.
A proper grown up tale of magic, revenge, passion, love and transformation.
The narrator was outstanding. She has a gift of bringing characters to life and her voice is so easy to listen to.
Highly recommended.

Starts well... then unravels

I really wanted to like this book - and for about the first third, I absolutely did. There's a lot to love - non-binary characters, wood magic, Elizabethan players and a famous fairy tale trope all woven together very deftly... to begin with. However, once the main story of Beauty and The Beast asserts itself - the Beauty imprisoned in the Beast's dungeon, etc. - and the 'wolf' that is mentioned in title of the book enters the picture, that deftly-woven narrative begins to unravel very quickly. From then on, it grows (I'm sad to say) tedious, repetitive and somewhat hackneyed. Such a shame, because some of the writing is beautiful - I feel there's a really good book in here desperate to get out, but once again, the lack of decent editors in contemporary publishing houses shows and the reader/listener is left with a rambling narrative that cries out for a confident and knowledgeable editor's pen. So frustrating.
