Summary
The ultimate autistic survival guide to therapy
"This is the book that would've saved me nine different therapists, decades of self-analysis, thousands of pounds, twelve different doctors and untold amounts of pain, frustration and trauma - in spending a lifetime looking for the right answers in the wrong places I've become an accidental expert."
In this candid, witty and insightful exploration into therapy, Steph Jones uses her professional and lived experiences as a late diagnosed autistic woman and therapist, as well as consulting therapists from across the world and tapping into the autistic community, to create the ultimate autistic survival guide to therapy.
Steph confronts the statistics, inadequate practices and ableist therapists head on and poses the questions of how we can make therapy neurodivergence-affirming and how to create safe spaces for autistic individuals. With strategic and practical advice to help recognise the 'red flags' of a dodgy therapist and provide a clear roadmap to finding your confidence and setting the appropriate boundaries with a new therapist, Steph has every question answered.
To support therapists striving for inclusivity and a neurodiverse affirming practice, the inclusion of a context guide provides a deconstruction of each therapy session so you can recognise how undiagnosed (or diagnosed) autism may present itself during therapy and how you can start to explore this in the therapeutic space.

The best book I've read on autism
This should be mandatory reading for not just autistic people but all those who are neurodivergent.

Very important read for autistic people
Great overview of types of therapies available and which types are more likely to be helpful to autistic people, and the reasons why. An empowering listen on audiobooks, and now going to buy in print as a reference book for my collection! Thank you Steph!

Excellent well considered & put together
Excellent overview of the neurodivergent experience & what does & might not work.
Reinforcing the need for validation rather than assuming something is wrong & potential benefits of supportive/coaching therapeutic interventions.

Invaluable
Such an important piece of writing. I was just about to start looking for a therapist for the first time in many years and I’m so glad I found this book first. I listened to the audiobook, which, as someone who struggles so much with concentration, was very pleasant and easy to listen to. I hope this book makes it into as many autistic hands as possible, and it should be required reading for every therapist.

Fabulous relatable read
This book was so authentic it felt like my own story (except for the actual diagnosis bit as I am in the long queue for assessment and at nearing 60 with other illnesses so I may never get to that point). I have had many Veronicas’ over the years and mental health support which has only perpetuated cyclical burnout episodes. The jaunty natural rhythm of this book had me commenting along and laughing in agreement. I highly recommend and hope there will be more from Steph Jones.

Life changing book
A must read for autistic people in my opinion. Steph has gone into so much detail and nuances that I have rarely seen in other books about this subject.
Practical, simple to understand and down to earth.
I highly recommend!

life affirming
Very helpful and a comforting read. So relatable and reassuring. All therapists should read/listen to this and take notes.
