Summary

In 24 lectures brimming with practical tips, tools, and techniques everyone can use to better manage conflict in his or her professional and personal lives, gain the essential skills of conflict management. As presented by Professor Dues, these lectures will show you how to effectively deal with conflicts of all kinds, using the "win-win" model that has dominated the field for the past six decades.

You'll gain effective techniques for handling conflicts in your workplace, other organizational settings, or your personal life, whether you're dealing with supervisors, coworkers, acquaintances, close friends, or family members. You'll learn the best ways to analyze conflicts and work through the steps toward resolving them, including clarifying goals, handling difficult emotions, and negotiating agreements. And you'll grasp the fundamental tricks of the trade that experienced negotiators have long used to deal with even the most seemingly intractable moral and cultural conflicts.

While drawing on the latest groundbreaking research, Professor Dues has designed these lectures to be as practical as possible. Requiring no background in conflict management, negotiation, or psychology, they offer you not just knowledge, but strategies and tactics you can put to work in your own life right now. Best of all, you'll be able to see those strategies and tactics in action through 70 professionally acted dramatizations that illustrate different conflict situations at home and in the workplace.

You don't have a choice about becoming involved in conflict. You do, however, have a choice about learning to manage it successfully by using the invaluable tools these lectures can give you.

Well worth listening to

Where does The Art of Conflict Management: Achieving Solutions for Life, Work, and Beyond rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I usually listen to courses based more around physics - this is new territory for me. I found it surprisingly compelling listening.

What other book might you compare The Art of Conflict Management: Achieving Solutions for Life, Work, and Beyond to, and why?

I haven't really listened to any other books of this genre.

What about Professor Michael Dues’s performance did you like?

The delivery was comfortable and well-paced, with a good mix of advice and anecdotes.

Any additional comments?

I would recommend this to anyone, even if they are not into the 'softer' sciences.

Nicely structured, logical progression.

With a friendly and appealing tone, Prof Dues structures his 35 years of wisdom into really pleasurable listening. I enjoyed walking into town while listening to one or more lectures then taking the time to note what I would like to pass on to my teams and others. Good summaries too after each one reminding us of the say, say, say structure and how effective that is.
Prof Dues sets a good example.

Clear, comprehensive and practical

This is a topic I work with quite a lot and I was looking for something that got its arms around the subject as a whole. Prof Dues delivers a very clear and helpful overview of the subject with practical tips about how to put the lessons to work, examples from his own work which bring the theories to life and short dramatic illustrations of concepts to life. Despite its length my attention never flagged because his delivery is excellent and there are so many useful theories and tactics on offer throughout. My personal highlight is the section dealing with the interplay of goals relating to topic, relationship, identity and process which form a major part of all conflicts but there are plenty more. I was primarily interested in this from a work perspective but the lectures also deal with personal relationships and raising kids to be effective at conflict management in their own lives.

Very highly recommended
