Summary

If you come into a lot of money, life becomes easier, right?

No, wrong - at least for Sally Nicholas, whose generosity of spirit immediately runs into all the slings and arrows outrageous fortune can send. Her handsome fiance turns out not to be all he seems - and then there is the show he's written, which Sally puts on in the theatre. No, in this delightful early novel from the master of English comedy, life is not straightforward at all.

But waiting in the wings is Ginger Kemp, who really does adore her, seems to make a hash of everything he tries and yet is always ready to try something else. If money becomes a problem, perhaps Ginger will provide a solution.

A good love story

More enjoyable than expected. Interesting insights as usual to class, gender and human nature.
A heart warming love story.

A Gorgeous, Gorgeous Book

Grab this audio-book - quickly - and discover that there is a different level to Wodehouse’s writing. This is a novel with the usual and wonderful excellence in the way that Wodehouse writes dialogue unique to the characters. This is a Wodehouse novel with the usual up and downs of changed circumstances and misunderstandings. This a Wodehouse novel with the usual deft plotting and resolution. This is a Wodehouse novel with the usual wit and sparkle. But it is far more in showing mastery in extended exploration of the thoughts and feelings of one character, Sally Nicholas. It is as good as anything in any other novel. This is almost Wodehouse’s re-working of Jane Austen’s ‘Emma’. Sally Nicholas will endure for me as a very favourite heroine, and one that deserves to be listened too and read by many more lucky people. Why this novel is not high in recommended reading suggestions I fail to understand. The performance of the audio-book by Jonathan Cecil is outstanding. The voice characterisations are extremely well chosen and performed. His verbal virtuosity is astounding, as can be appreciated in the duelling Italian waiters. Loved it. You will too.

Brilliant Jonathan Cecil and brilliant P. G. Wodehouse

If, like me, you are disappointed to find that you’ve bought a P. G. Wodehouse audiobook and the narration is just not up to the mark, rest assured because Jonathan Cecil sets the standard. He is always brilliant and captures the essence of Wodehouse. Always check out the narrator of Wodehouse audiobooks because, sadly, there are some unlistenables out there. I could name one in particular but that wouldn’t be fair.

Great story and characters.

Excellently written. Lovely characters. Wodehouse has great respect, sympathy and kindness towards female characters, too - which is nice.
Very well read by Jonathan Cecil, as always.
