About this listen

The usual suspects, including Lord Emsworth and his prize pig, the Empress, line up at Blandings Castle for a Wodehousian caper that sees members of the upper-classes getting hot and bothered over a nude painting they all want to get their hands on. This is wit at its very finest, read by one of our superlative actors, who reads Wodehouse with the requisite style and panache.©2006 CSA Telltapes Ltd. (P)2006 CSA Telltapes Ltd. The usual Wodehouse fun

The book was well read and easy to follow - if a little dated. The plot was straight-forward and a nice distraction from the seriousness of everyday life. Rather a short book - but most of Wodehouse's stores are!

A nice easy listen

Listened to this in two sittings . A nice easy listen with predictable Wodehouse characters brought to life in a way only Martin Jarvis can do so. Very enjoyable

thoroughly enjoyable

Well read with good character voices, a narrator capable of captivating a distracted mind and so relaxing the body, perfect for nights I can't sleep

Great fun

Great story, although maybe not one of his finest; great narrator; and plenty of laughs to keep listeners chuckling out loud even in the 21st century.

A good listen

Very well narrated. Enjoyable light hearted fun.
I felt the narrator gave a perfect rendering of all the characters. Gally Clarence and Aunt Connie especially! Recommended.

Wodehouse without Wooster

Brilliant storytelling by Martin Jarvis. The story has the clever younger brother of Lord Emsworth, Galahad orchestrating the action. It is a lovely change from the usual Jeeves and Wooster. All ends happily ever after as you would expect but a jolly romp on the way. Absolutely excellent.

Great fun and brilliantly read

A rollicking Wodehouse. Good fun read with all the usual excellent accents and drama that Martin Jarvis brings to these books

Full marks to Jarvis

I’m a huge fan of Wodehouse but it has to be said that this isn’t one of his strongest efforts. There are of course delightful moments, wonderful turns of phrase etc. but the plot is dialled in and the incidental characters are all a little one dimensional. Having said that the whole thing is saved by Martin Jarvis’s performance which is superb throughout.
