Discover Thrawn’s origins within the Chiss Ascendancy in the first book in an epic new Star Wars trilogy from bestselling author Timothy Zahn.

Beyond the edge of the galaxy lies the Unknown Regions: chaotic, uncharted, and near impassable, with hidden secrets and dangers in equal measure. And nestled within its swirling chaos is the Ascendancy, home to the enigmatic Chiss and the Nine Ruling Families that lead them.

The peace of the Ascendancy, a beacon of calm and stability, is shattered after a daring attack on the Chiss capital that leaves no trace of the enemy. Baffled, the Ascendancy dispatches one of its brightest young military officers to root out the unseen assailants. A recruit born of no title, but adopted into the powerful family of the Mitth and given the name Thrawn.

With the might of the Expansionary Fleet at his back, and the aid of his comrade Admiral Ar’alani, answers begin to fall into place. But as Thrawn’s first command probes deeper into the vast stretch of space his people call the Chaos, he realizes that the mission he has been given is not what it seems.
And the threat to the Ascendancy is only just beginning.

A must read for Thrawn Fans

have to say what an amazing book that leaves you wanting more

After the first trilogy of Thrawn this is an amazing backstory of one of the smartest Star Wars characters

Read the first 3 books before this one it will make it so much more enjoyable in my opinion

Timothy and Marc do it again - what more is there to say? It's fantastic

Perfect performance - terrible producing

I couldn't understand Thrawn whenever he was wearing a space helmet or talking over comms. I missed out on entire segments of dialogue because of an obscene amount of effects. Highly frustrating.

Excellent

An excellent beginning to the Thrawn saga as long as you count the Outbound Flight story as a prequel to the saga.

Narrative and Author

Marc is a fantastic narrator and Timothy is a brilliant storyteller. I always feel submersed in the story.

A good book, good performances, but...

I really like Timothy Zahn’s star wars books since heir to the empire, so this one is also a good one. The performances are also good in general, similar to other star wars audio books.

One thing I really dislike is some of the sound affects. They can be quite distracting, and sometimes I can’t even hear what is being said (especially when the characters were speaking through masks in this book, I couldn’t understand what they were saying).

So please don’t put too much sound affects into these audiobooks. I’m even okay with no sound affects at all, what I primarly want is to hear the words clearly.

Very fun but can focus to much on less interesting characters

a great performance from Marc Thompson and great special effects and music that keep the whole book very immersive. A very fun story but I feel they focus to much on Thalias hen she is one of the less interesting characters she’s not a bad character but she seems to do very little until later in the book. I would have preferred a bigger focus on Aralani and her crew as they seemed much more interesting with good dynamics between the various characters. But over all it was fun seeing them all go through and work out what is happening.

perfection

Really gripping story arc that definitely fleshes Thrawn out to be wise and cunning beyond my imagination.

If you like Thrawn, you'll love this book!

Thought it was great to see more of the Chiss! I think it sets up the stage well for the next book
