About this listen
Walde has inherited a forbidden power from his father, enabling him to commune with Thara, an enigmatic being that lives deep in the earth. Walde thinks he can keep this power a secret, but one day he slips. His father is blamed and executed, the body placed on a raft and sent down a rushing river. Walde breaks free and goes after him...only to discover that the execution was staged. Very much alive, his father floats off to a mysterious end. During Walde’s perilous journey to rescue him, he learns what is truly at stake: not only his father, but also his people’s entire way of life.

Interesting idea
This book is an interesting fantasy tale, based in the world of 'Reachers' who can commune with a spiritual being found in 'mother trees'. The few reachers that still exist are persecuted and either imprisoned or killed - reminds me of heretics in medieval times (only in reverse). The story is interesting but a little slow to get established, and comes into its own about halfway through the book. My main gripe is unfortunately the narrator. His delivery is fine (with occasion 'page turning' gaps which should have been edited out), but I'm afraid the heroine Bright's voice sounds like a little wizened Irish man, which is a bit disconcerting when she's supposed to be an auburn haired beauty. I think Mr Morey's voice is just too old for a book like this, although the accents seemed to improve towards the end. A pleasant enough listen, given the caveats.

Slow burn initially
It took me a few goes to get into this, but pleased I stuck with it. A slow burn initially but picks up the pace about a third of the way in. The narrator was perhaps not ideal, though good, a little too soporific at times. Overall though I enjoyed this and aim to listen to the next book straight away!

Good fantasy story
The book is rather slow to begin with, but when you persist it develops into a very well written and enjoyable fantasy story. The main story begins with Walde accidentally discovering he is a Reacher, a tree dweller with great power. There is great fear for his life as Reacher's are discriminated against and killed once discovered. Waldes father is taken which sets him on a journey to rescue him. This takes him on an adventure where he discovers the truth about his people, dissolving the mystery and conspiracy depicted by those who fear and wish to harm the Reacher's.
I didn't get on well with the narrator, but looking forward to book 2.
I was given this book for free of my own choosing and voluntarily left this review.

Interesting.
This book makes me think about our disconnection from the earth, nature, and how we have become disconnected from our own humanity. Also the situation with the Covid vaccine, how people are not prepared to do something for the whole, just themselves. I know wealth and power have been an issue for very long...

what an adventure!
I have stopped but briefly just to leave a review of this brilliantly written story, before moving on to book 2. The author captured me from very early in and held me tight right to the close of the book. Enchanting! Exciting! Tense.
I listened to the audio version And was very impressed with the narration.

Refreshing
This book is interesting and follows the development of Walde and Bright as they travel to try and save Walde's father.
The book develops the world and the characters and it covers the many trials they face as they travel from Walde's home to the port city where his father has been sent.
Not only must he learn to deal with his emotions he must also learn to recognize the feelings he develops along the way and to recognize that not everyone thinks as he has been brought up to think.
The narration is good with the many voices for the many characters.
This book was provided free of charge with the hope for an honest review.

ENJOYED THE STORY
This is a very good storyline with a new type of fantasy character. It is written so well you can picture the setting and become truly involved.
The narrator does an excellent job.

Entertaining engrossing fantasy
I was hooked right from the start, a wonderful story of mystery and adventure, full of believable well described characters superbly written. The author has created a wonderfully vivid and detailed world, an entertaining and engrossing story that I loved. I look forward to reading the next in the series. The narration is perfect for the story, easy to listen to and giving the story even more life. I received a copy of this audiobook from the author and am leaving a voluntary honest review.

Silver light.
A story that you do not want to put down or for the story to finish. It draws you in in-such a way that you can visualise the story as it moves along.
