Summary
It’s the autumn of 1890, and a spate of bombings has hit London. The newspapers are full of fevered speculation about anarchists, antimonarchists and Fenians. But one man suspects an even more sinister hand behind the violence.
Sherlock Holmes believes Professor Moriarty is orchestrating a nationwide campaign of terror, but to what end? At the same time, a bizarrely garbed figure has been spotted on the rooftops and in the grimy back alleys of the capital.
He moves with the extraordinary agility of a latter-day Spring-heeled Jack. He possesses weaponry and armor of unprecedented sophistication. He is known only by the name Baron Cauchemar, and he appears to be a scourge of crime and villainy. But is this masked man truly the force for good that he seems? Is he connected somehow to the bombings?
Holmes and his faithful companion Dr. Watson are about to embark on one of their strangest and most exhilarating adventures yet.

I liked it.
Very much in the spirit of the originals just marred for me by the narrator’s voice of Sherlock Homes. It was a bit too monotone and there were some decidedly odd pronunciations of words! Overall though, I would listen to another.

Very good book
The story mixes genres, making it a unique experience.
These genres bring more excitement and intrigue into the book.
On the other hand, there is a gap in the clues, implying coincidence, or at least not clearly explained.
On the whole, an excellent read, well performed.

Absolute madness! Quite fun as such
Not one for the hardcore Holmes fan, but if you like all the cliched Holmes-isms (Holmes amazing someone by knowing everything about them, based on ludicrous deductive leaps) and aren’t averse to the introduction of some kind of crazy Steampunk Batman-esque vigilante character, a bad guy with the Frenchisms of the knights in Monty Python’s Holy Grail, who also happens to end up enlisting a Victorian-era Transformer to his cause, a Baritsu vs Savate UFC-style dust-up and all kinds of other anachronistic madness, you will find this your dream novel

Transformers springs to mind 😁
Great, swashbuckling tale that I thoroughly enjoyed, and the French accent of the villain reminded me so much of the French knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail: "I fart in your general direction". I listened to that with a constant smile on my face! 😁

Enjoyable plot with occasionally dodgy narration
As with all of the James Lovegrove Sherlock Holmes books I have listened to this story is enjoyable and plausible in the genre.
Yet again the narration is irritating. It’s mostly really good but occasionally a word, phrase or place name is completely mispronounced eg “toying and froying” Instead of toing and froing or GrantHam instead of Grantham.

Great Fun
I really enjoy these Sherlock stories, and the narrator is brilliant! I'm not a fan of the other series, which focuses on a more fantasy style.

Jules Verne meets Conan Doyle
Great story with great goodies and really bad baddies adding another dimension to our much loved Holmes canon. Excellent narration as well.

Best one so far
I love all James Lovegrove’s books but this is the best of the bunch I think. Gripping from start to finish.
