About this listen

Alone. Surrounded by monsters. Armed only with his fists... Time to fight.

Jack Rust was a disillusioned biologist with a PhD—almost. When an extraterrestrial AI calling itself the System invaded Earth and thrust it into a world of aliens, magic, and violence, Jack hoped to at least get some magic himself.

Nope.

Even worse, the System spawned a forest dungeon around him and a goblin in his face....

Armed with nothing but his fists, Jack must grow strong enough to survive hordes of monsters. He needs to return to civilization and find out what the heck is going on. He might even get magic—or not. Surprising himself, Jack discovers that violence is fun.

In this battle-ridden new world, Jack finds the life he always dreamed about. He won’t just survive. He will thrive.

Don't miss the start of this action-packed new LitRPG Apocalypse series from Valerios. Join Jack the brawler as he pummels everything that gets in his way with his fists on his road to mastery and power. It's perfect for fans of Primal Hunter, Defiance of the Fall, and lovers of all things progression fantasy and LitRPG.

Really great story one bit would make it better

The time frame all this happens is too quick like 3 days for dungeon and in one month tournament that is a bit of a reach. I would have liked to see the time frame extended

Not really a fan of the MC bit of a moron imo. I just feel the book is significantly worse than the ones it's trying to borrow from. I'm fine with people putting there own spin on idea or I wouldn't be into these genres. I even don't mind if the book isn't objectively good. Just something about this one rubbed me the wrong way. The other reviewers seemed to like it so maybe try it and see what you think.

Beware the monkey

Enjoyable book, look forward to sequel.
Good character building and supporting monkey, I’m sure he’ll be the MC in the sequel 😀.

Rocky start and very familiar

I'm settling on a 3-star rating, not because it's a bad book, but simply because it doesn't align directly with my personal tastes.

In the realm of LitRPG, this book doesn't get close to the summit. It doesn't blaze new trails or push the boundaries of the genre; rather, it comfortably rests on the foundations laid by its predecessors. It's clear that it draws heavy inspiration from works like Defiance of the Fall, leading it to suffer from lesser cousin syndrome in comments. However, it's worth noting that imitation can be a form of flattery.

It seems the author aimed to cast a wide net to capture a broad audience, resulting in a rather safe narrative that attempts to offer a little bit of everything. Consequently, it struggles to carve out its own distinct identity. Nevertheless, its popularity speaks volumes, so perhaps I'm in the minority.

That said, I did soldier through the entire book, despite wrestling with the urge to abandon ship early on. Thankfully, after the initial section, the initial dungeon, the story picked up. The beginning felt tailored to a very young audience or those extremely new to the genre, but as the narrative unfolded, the author's storytelling abilities became more evident. There was less of a bombardment of moral explanations and more of a natural progression in character development.

Personally, I lean towards characters who act based on their inherent nature rather than constantly explaining their moral compass. Perhaps I'm drawn to a touch of Grimdark in my protagonists, but even those with virtuous tendencies don't need to over-explain their every decision.

If the author had geared the narrative towards a more mature audience—I don’t mean erotica, but in terms of grittier, more realistic character arcs and decision-making—the book would have easily earned an extra star. I think the author can go on to do great things, and I will read not listen to book 2 in case I need the ability to skim read any of the annoying shenanigans from book 1.

Seriously silly, well worth it!

I really enjoyed this. The main character starts off really relatable and the situations he finds himself in a weird and wonderful.

It’s more Kung Pow than Shakespeare, and I had great fun along the way!

Good story, enjoyed overall

Enjoyed the story, slightly lacking in depth vs some other books I’ve read but pace and action were both good. Another 34 hours for book 2 so let’s see where that one goes!
