About this listen

Matthew Scudder, a down-but-not-out-detective, is shocked by the apparent suicide of Paula, a waitress at Armstrong’s, one of Scudder’s hangouts. When Paula’s sister shows up and asks Matt to investigate what she believes to be a murder, Scudder agrees to take on the case. A number of clues don’t add up to suicide, and Scudder’s investigation leads him to the dark corners of Paula’s world.

Awful narrator spoilt story

I have never heard an interesting book be ruined by the narrator. I was very disappointed

"Like a ghost through walls."

Matt Scudder, retired cop who left the police after inadvertently shooting a little girl and, simultaneously, also left his wife and family to concentrate on his drinking, is asked by the younger sister of a declared suicide to prove that it was actually murder.

The writing is tight, no superfluous wording yet everything, and everyone is perfectly portrayed. Read by the author, his slightly gravelly and sardonic tone suits the character of Scudder well and other protagonists are given individual voices. The whole experience is most enjoyable despite the brevity of the book.

Recommended.

Just superlative 💖

L Block has the perfect sardonic tone to match his own peerless work of New York noir.
