About this listen
London, 1927: One house. Three lives. A decision that will change everything. A powerful, unique timeslip story, perfect for fans of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, The Miniaturist, and Lucinda Riley.
On the morning of Friday 5th August, 1927, Miss Agnes Humphries – the landlady of the attractive, if-slightly-shabby, white-fronted townhouse at Number 23 Burlington Square – has a decision to make.
The rooms of the second floor lie empty, since poor Mr Blandford’s unfortunate demise, God rest his soul. And Agnes must make up her mind as to who will be her new lodger… Will it be her spirited, young niece Clara, who drifts through the glamorous world of London’s Bright Young Things? Or Stephen, the sensible, church-going, respectable banker who seems just be too good to be true? Or the timid war widow named Mercy, who is clearly running from something – or someone…?
Agnes must choose between them. But what will her decision lead to? One of the choices could result in scandal, one in devastation, and one could even lead to happiness. If only she gets it right…
As all three lodgers enter Number 23, in alternate timelines, relationships are formed and destroyed, feathers are ruffled, and secrets are exposed. Three different choices. Three very different paths. And Agnes is to discover that nobody – including herself – is quite who they seem…

parallel universe
I loved the concept of this story, the choices made in life and how they can change an outcome. I've often thought about what would happen at a crossroads in your life if a different route had been chosen and Jenni has written a beautiful story delving into this theory.
I engaged with the characters, was surprised by some of the twists and envisaged the house, rooms and supporting characters.
it's a story of truth, loyalty and friendship and I very much recommend it.

A Wonderful Story
I loved this book, so well written, heartwarming and funny, especially Clara! her one liners and sarcasm! I think she was my favourite character along with kind and caring Agnes. And such a lovely ending! This is my sixth book narrated by Lucy Scott, such a beautiful voice, she makes the story so much more enjoyable. I will definitely be reading 📚 more from this author. Love her writing and have enjoyed this story so much!

Interesting characters
Enjoyed this book despite being slightly long winded and in places predictable. But beautifully read so was a good read

What a lovely book!
I so enjoyed reading it, I'll probably listen again at some point. Wonderful narration, and a lovely "sliding doors" sort of tale, about how one decision can lead to a different life than another decision taken.

One of My fFvourites of 2023
This was a wonderful historical fiction audiobook! I’d seen it in the blogosphere quite a bit, but it was a bookblogger friend’s review that tempted me. I’m so glad I didn’t resist as it’s one of my favourite books this year and it gave me a book hangover!
I loved being in the company of Agnes and the lodgers of No 23 Burlington Square. I loved getting to know each character as they came to live at the house, slowly revealing their shocking secrets!
I loved Agnes and her funny ways, and really enjoyed learning about her story throughout the book. She’d had quite a sad life and I hoped she’d get her happy ever after at the end of the book. The historical details were fantastic making me feel like I’d been transported back to the 1920s.
I loved Lucy Scott’s narration, she was superb at all the different characters, bringing them to life perfectly and confirming that she’s definitely one of my favourite narrators.
Highly recommended if you enjoy historical fiction set in London during the 1920s.

People's lives!
An intriguing 'sliding doors' novel, which the further I got into, the more I became invested in the characters and their individual stories. The author's descriptive writing is beautiful and multi-layered, and Lucy Scott is the perfect narrator for the book!

Good story, terrible voices!
Really good story but totally spoiled by the narrators quite frankly ridiculous voices. I stopped listening at a few points as I couldn’t bear it but liked the story so persevered.
