About this listen
Scheming social climber Alexa may be humbly born. But only a title, mansion and family tiara will do. Befriending feckless aristo Florrie (three surnames plus black hole where her brain should be) means the grandest doors swing open and the prince of her dreams is in sight. But has Florrie’s mother, the formidable Lady Annabel, rumbled what Alexa is up to? Beautiful but penniless student Polly, meanwhile, is in love. Is Max, the handsome young vet she’s found in a country lane, quite as ordinary as he seems, however? Passionate love, eye-widening snobbery and more than naked ambition abound in this contemporary Cinderella tale. Jilly Bond reads Wendy Holden’s deliciously satirical novel of the upwardly mobile.

Daft - but good fun
Any additional comments?
I'd have loved to have listened to Paula Wilcox's version but sadly she got stuck with the abridged one, which never works, and to be fair Jilly Bond does read this well.
The story is the usual Holden mix of ludicrous caricature characters and circumstances mixed with totally believable characters and aspects that in a weird way always seems to work and to entertain. A bit like Tom Sharpe for chick lit?
I still think Filthy Rich and The Wives of Bath are the best by far, but this is ok, with some very funny sideswipes at the class system and the landed aristos. It's far more entertaining read out loud than it ever was to read, Jilly making some of the more ludicrous aspects sound almost reasonable.
Please please please can we have Beautiful People recorded next? (Unabridged, naturally)

What a lovely story and beautifully read.
This is an unusual story with 4 good themes running through. I love the low class girl trying to better herself, Wendy Holden describes this perfectly, "must not say toilet" and other gems. She is pushy but does not win her prince. The lovely natural girl does. Then we have the titled girl with an awful mother and, last but not least, the Prince and his delightful family problems. Characters are well defined and create mind images! I recommend this book as a good easy listen but with an intricate pattern of characters. Several parts made me giggle to myself. An excellent story.
