About this listen
A story about young teenagers forced into war and the concept of luck.
Kalyah and the young soldier have met before in a more innocent time. They could have been sweethearts, but now they are facing life, death, and tough decisions.
This short audiobook is the first in a three part series.
Originally, the author conceived this story as a stand-alone short story following a particularly lucid dream she had after working on a website for an international non-profit agency whose work included protecting children in areas where child soldiers exist. She felt the story was powerful enough to share and liked the idea of releasing a bite-size audible story that could be read or listened to in its entirety on a commute or one sitting. After feedback from the first readers and listeners, Ferrigan realized that the story deserved a more complete narrative. It took several years to find the voice and time to complete the series. Now, the second part, A Change in the Wind has been released and the final part in the series, The Specific Heat of Water is in process, scheduled to also be released in September 2024.

Tragic
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
This follows two teenagers, but really only one, as they are forced into a civil war that they don't understand. This is book one in a three part series, and it feels like you need the others in the series to understand what is actually the full plot of the series because this part focuses on Kalyah and why she's on the run.

Beautifully written, tragic short story
Kalyah is a young teenager caught in the middle of a horrific civil war. Her family members are all brutally murdered by soldiers whilst she hides and then manages to get away. But she is eventually tracked down and taken, by a soldier, to what she thinks will be her death. He too is a young teenager and Kalyah realises she knows him from a happier past.
This short story caught my attention from the outset and I could quite easily have continued to listen on to a full book based on the quality of writing and narration. The author captures a moment and compels the reader/listener to see and feel the horror of these young people's lives. Lives that are being lived and lost in countless places around the world now. The narrator has a very gentle, hypnotic tone that reflects the age of the characters well and helps draw the listener in and create the atmosphere for this very tragic story.
This is book 1 of 3 so I shall look forward to the next parts of the story.
I received a foc review copy of this story from the author/narrator/publisher via Audiobook Boom at my request and this is an unbiased review.
