About this listen
They were looking for their dream home. They found a nightmare.
In 1886, Ingledene was the scene of the brutal deaths of a greengrocer and his wife at each other's hands. 138 years later, the house had lain empty for almost a decade with nobody willing to enter the dark and rotting home. That is until author River Johnson and her husband Cole arrive in the Devon town of Smallwood, looking for their ideal home. Their budget is far smaller than the average property values, but when Cole notices a joint listing for Ingledene and the greengrocers in the high street, the price is too good to pass up.
After a strange encounter with the house's caretaker, River begins to feel as if something is very wrong with the house. Over the next few days, she sees faces at the window, hears breathing in the darkness, and has an encounter with a mysterious man with an axe who vanishes before her eyes. A few days later while checking out the greengrocers, a warning is thrown through the shop window, warning them that they are in danger, and to leave as soon as possible.
But it may already be too late.
From the author of the Dark Corner Series, Horizon, and the Little Nightmares series, comes this British horror full of scares, jump scares and blood. Lots and lots of blood.

just sufficient tension
Not my normal genre, but the good pace kept my interest. listening was enhanced by superb narration and I am encouraged to look for more by the same reader as I find decent narration adds so much to a story's enjoyment.

Why you never buy a house unseen!
I'll start this by saying I don't normally read horror, however, I love David W.Adams' other books so I knew I'd read this anyway. I'm SO glad I did. Sure, it's gory, creepy and people die, but it's advertised as a classic British horror and that's exactly want you get. The story is engaging and I whisked through, absolutely wanting to know what was going to happen next. Brilliant.
5 stars to both writer and narrator.
