About this listen

Riley’s Guardians are breaking apart, and he fears he can’t put them back together again.

A hybrid born of an Angel-Fallen union, Riley Shepard is an anomaly coveted by both sides of an ancient war. But he doesn’t want to fight their war; he has his own battles to face. As his family fractures, bonds are tested, and forbidden feelings threaten to tear his heart into bloody thirds.

When the next attack comes - not from the outside but from within - is he strong enough to separate truth from lies, allies from enemies, reality from fantasy? How can Riley know what’s true, when he doesn’t even know what’s real?

Life isn’t simple, love is complicated, and reality is terrifyingly blurry.

Illusion is the third book in the slow-burn harem/poly romance series, Fire & Brimstone, featuring hurt/comfort and broken but brave guardian angels; the first spicy taste of love, and an unlikely hero who learns to embrace his deepest desires.

Trigger warnings include: aftermath and non-graphic mentions of sexual assault, self-destructive behavior, and situations of mental instability.

Brilliant

Absolutely brilliant!

This is my favourite book of the series so far.
It was heartbreaking and wholesome, brutal and adorable.

I really enjoyed seeing Riley’s growth, and the healing that he and his angels under go.

I particularly enjoyed how well written particular scenes towards the end were written, when Riley is questioning reality. The way previous conversations/sentences were brought- had me right there with Riley- questioning what was real, and of his perceived experience was truth! Fantastic!

Also the epilogue was everything!

I will 10000% be continuing with this series

My favorite harem-to-be

Riley’s life is complicated. As an anomaly whom everyone wants a piece of, he struggles. He has his protectors, sure, but even they can’t agree on how to care for him. He just wants to finish college and to keep the peace in the house. Oh, and NOT fall in love with the guardians who would give their lives for him.

Sometimes, school is the easiest part of his world. When his old foster mother reappears, things get much worse. He’s declared mentally unstable, and his world begins to crumble. It seems as if even his guardians aren’t going to be able to rescue him. But, as they have his entire life, they step up. And if that foster mother might’ve finally gotten what she deserved? I would be okay with that. Those stories of abuse still haunt me.

This isn’t an easy book – none have been so far. Riley’s early lessons of the deviancy of homosexuality have had a profound impact, and the rules about how guardians interact with their charges leaves him even more confused. He’s attracted to the three men in his life tasked with caring for him. But the rules say he can’t have them in that way.

By the end of the book there is a potential work-around, but there are far too many open questions. I know the series continues, and I can’t wait for the next audio to come out. Especially because Kirt Graves is such a great narrator. He’s perfect for the angsty and still young Riley. He does the other characters well also, but his Riley sticks with me. Can’t wait for more.

Angst with Hope

Illusion is the third book in the Fire and Brimstone Scroll series. This series must be read in order otherwise the reader will be completely lost and confused. The second book was packed with action and suspense and ended with Noel's rescue. Book three picks up from there, but it focuses on the healing process that Riley and his guardians have to go through after such drastic trauma. The angst is HIGH in this book. Certain characters frustrated me with their bad decisions, but the ending brought satisfaction because the characters became self-aware. This was a heavy book, but the ending left the reader with hope.

The audiobook was narrated by Kirt Graves who did a fantastic job. He put a lot of emotion and passion into his narration which really enriched the story. The audiobook production was well done.

The series just keeps getting better

I don’t even know how to explain how much better this series continues to get.

In Illusion, Riley and his Guardians are struggling to come to terms with the feelings between them all. Relationships between Wards and their Guardians are a no-no, so this doesn’t help with the tension. Add in that it’s just post Noel’s rescue so there’s lots of stuff going on with this. It may be less action-y than the first 2 books, but that’s because it’s focussing more on the relationship between Reilly, Jai, Noel and Gideon and there’s lots to unpack there.

Great narration too - Kirt Graves really nails this series!

Their Relationships Continue To Evolve.

MMMM, Dark, Fantasy, Ménage/Poly/Harem, Paranormal, Slow burn, Hurt Comfort. Easy to read, compelling story. Not a stand-alone as the story continues on in each book. Twists and turns throughout the story, an emotional story with angst brilliantly written and narrated fantastically by Kirt Graves. I'm not left with any unanswered questions at the end as the story is thorough and gives lots of details.

Emotional

I clicked on this audio so damn fast when it came out. I’m been eagerly looking forward to this one.

Kirk Graves did a wonderful job bringing the characters to life. He captured their emotions, pain and depth of their feelings perfectly.

If you haven’t read this series then I would strongly recommend reading from the beginning. This is mind blowing yet emotional series that left my heart aching and don’t even get me started on my never ending waterworks.

I’m in awe of these series

For a series that accidentally fell into my hands (ears), this has quickly become one of my favorite stories EVER. I love everything about this - from the story, to characters, to the slow but oh so believable and relatable burn, to the wonderful and complex relationships and the diversity of all the different ways we love. The story is so believable it melts my heart. I can’t put it down. And the narrator Kirt makes all of the above a million times more enjoyable through his magnificent performance. Wow. Just wow.

Beautiful and heart-breaking

I loved this beautiful, yet heart-breaking, third "Scroll" in the Fire and Brimstone series. This is the third book in a continuing series and is NOT standalone. It flows directly from the first two books, and you need them for the history. The scenes and description of the aftermath of Noel's capture, rape, and torture (from book 2) were just heart-breaking. Follow this with Riley's arrest and return to the mental ward, and this one is just packed with angst and despair. But in the end, there is love and hope that makes it all worthwhile. If I have any complaints, it is just those occasions when the story (and his guardians) make Riley sound like he's 10 rather than 20. That makes the whole sexual attraction thing feel a little icky and weird.

The narration by Kirt Graves is fantastic and really brings emotion and feeling to the characters and the story.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from Gay Romance Reviews and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Great story and performer

The focus on this book in the series are the emotional battles of our characters, not so much the outer ones. The outer threat is still there, obviously, but here we find the characters grappling with feelings that are forbidden in their world and trying to balance love, desire, friendship and all the complications of a poly relationship. A wonderful continuation of the series and I can't wait to see how the growth that happened in this book translates back into more action in the next one. Kirt Graves is one of my all time favorite audio performers because every character he performs comes alive for me in 3D and I can see them just like a movie. He works that magic with all the characters here.

Intense...

This amazing series continued in book 3. I enjoyed a lot how Riley, Jai, Noel and Gideon overcame new challenges in their feelings and relationships, while struggling to accept the past. I need to made a couple of comments: First, this book is part of a series, you really need to read it in order, or you were going to loose all the captivating plot, the intricate relationships between the characters and how everything started. One of the best series ever written by Ms Knight. Second, this book is intense, full of angst and many difficult emotions that made me cry and cause me stress but at the end all settled just fine. Mr Graves is a wonderful voice actor and managed all the emotions and feelings beautifully helping me to enjoy even more the characters and the story. Great narration!
