One hell of a ride
Narration is spot on as usual and although a very long book, I really did enjoy it. Perhaps 'enjoy' is not always applicable with our author as the themes to his books seem even darker than Hebert or King, being more sexual and gruesome in content - but I tolerate the former and do admit to 'enjoying' the latter (wonder what that says about me?) This is the complicated story of a small town visited by evil over the period of 7 days. Does the evil arrive with our tortured detective who has returned to his birthplace after his exploits in Good Samaritan (I really enjoyed that novel too). Evil is voiced by the narrator who conveys a sense of menace throughout the novel - and does it so very well. There are many deaths, strange happenings, dark thoughts and sometimes, even humour but this is not a comfortable read. Mr Carver has a very warped view of mankind but such evil does exist in our society although most of us will never see (or even think) it. Suspension of belief will be required but if you can do that, then this book may well suit you as it did me.
