Summary

A masterful, heart-palpitating novel of small-town horror and psychological dread from a Bram Stoker nominee.

Aaron Decker's life changes one December morning when his wife, Allison, is killed. Haunted by her absence - and her ghost - Aaron goes through her belongings, where he finds a receipt for a motel room in another part of the country. Piloted by grief and an increasing sense of curiosity, Aaron embarks on a journey to discover what Allison had been doing in the weeks prior to her death.

Yet Aaron is unprepared to discover the dark secrets Allison kept, the death and horror that make up the tapestry of her hidden life. And with each dark secret revealed, Aaron becomes more and more consumed by his obsession to learn the terrifying truth about the woman who had been his wife, even if it puts his own life at risk.

Gripping amateur detective

really enjoyed this book, starts off strong and straight into the story. Following our amateur detective as he works he’s way through the story. With the subtle hints of is this supernatural or not?
One of those books that you recommend to people (as I have to a few now) Just so you can discuss it with them, too good a book to keep to yourself

Very good

Wasn’t sure about the story in the beginning but got more and more intense. Can recommend

Properly entertaining

I loved this and I really didn’t think it would be my thing at all. Great story that was well narrated. I must have seen someone mention Ronald Malfi on social media as I had him on my list of authors to check out and I’m so glad and did. And even more glad that now I have loads of his books to read in the future. I got this to keep me company while I did some ironing and ended up listening all day. I don’t really want to write more about the actual bones of the book because I’m very sensitive to spoilers myself. Proper entertainment, highly recommend.

Interesting book

I quite enjoyed this one. Certainly a cut above the usual waste of a credit. I liked the subtle supernatural overtones. Most of the characters were quite interesting and there were enough twists and turns so that the ending wasn't entirely predicable. Competent narrator too. On the whole not a bad tale. For me, it won't bear a second listen but it did help pass a fairly entertaining 11 hours while I worked.

Wish the story had been a bit more exciting and suspenseful

I think this is a easy listen especially if you’re just listening to full time but I do wish it had been more suspenseful. The story felt a bit bland and repetitive at time.

Loved it until the end!

I was really keen to listen to another book by Ronald Malfi after December Park (which I loved and thoroughly recommend). On an 80:20 rule this book certainly passed the test, I did enjoy it up to the end. I won't do spoilers but the end spoilt it for me leaving me really dissatisfied. One of those where I wish I had lost the last chapter!

Brilliant surprise find

Lots of twists, turns, dead ends, red herrings… this kept me guessing all the way through. Thoroughly enjoyed it

amazing story

I really enjoyed this story which I don't recommend listening to when you go for a run by yourself at dark as it has some really Creepy bits. the characters really feel real and it was hard to put down.

Brilliant from start to finish

Sometimes audiobooks can take me weeks to listen to, especially if I lose interest. This one kept me going and up late as I listened within a week over Christmas and New Year. Suspenseful and creepy in places. Very highly recommended.

Loved the story

The authors note at the end I felt was so apt and the story was brilliantly written. Will definitely be looking for more books by this author.
