About this listen

A new clue to an unsolved murder.

A dangerous killer on the loose.

A reporter desperate for a scoop…

It’s August 1962 and Brighton Evening Chronicle crime reporter Colin Crampton needs a front-page story. Then Colin gets a tip-off that Arnold Trumper, who owns the seafront’s miniature golf course, has disappeared. And that Trumper’s vanishing act is linked to an unsolved murder.

Powerful people don’t want Colin to find the truth. He uses every newspaper scam he knows to get his scoop. Trouble is Colin’s girlfriend, feisty Australian Shirley Goldsmith, carries the can when a scam misfires. Can Colin win a race against time to land his story—and keep Shirley on-side? The laughs are never far from the action when Colin and Shirley face dangers they never anticipated as they race to crack the case.

Brighton crime at its finest

I received a free copy for audible in exchange of an honest review. As I live in Brighton and love crime novels, I couldn't wait to listen.

As the book opened with a strong but clipped narration, I was sure if I was going to enjoy the listen. It was a very short time before Colin Crampton, journalist for the Brighton Evening Chronicle, and the authors dry humour pulled me in! I will asolutely be on the hunt for the next in the series.

Set in Brighton in 1962, Crampton, looking for a story, learns of a missing man call Trumper the owner of "Krazy Kat" a rundown crazy golf course on the sea front.

Whilst Crampton is on the hunt for his scoop, you also meet his hot headed australian girlfriend Shirley who ends up being arrested after one of his journalist tricks goes wrong.

Headline Murder was an entertaining and fun read /listen with lots of humour throughout. The narrator for this book had me in mind of an old fashioned movie private investigator which suited Cramptons character brilliantly.

Great period mystery

I have read nearly all of Peter Bartram's books in the 'Headline Heroes' series and so it was interesting to listen to the audio version of this first book in the series.
The story is fast-paced and exciting, being mainly set in the offices of a local newspaper in Brighton in the 1960s. I love the period feel of the story and it brought back happy memories of living through that period.
The narration is spot on, Matt Jamie manages to really bring all the characters to life and gives each their own voice, it is interesting to compare his idea of each character's accent with the ones I heard in my head when reading the story, most are very similar.
All in all a very enjoyable listen of a very good book.

Great story line

Enjoyed this very much, and would highly recommend. The story went along at a quick pace, with little to no unnecessary infill. Narration was fast pace and not bogged down with bad attempts at accents of the different characters. The lead character was likable and you were behind him all the way.
