About this listen
The world has returned to the Steam Age. Incensed by cross-border raids from England, the Scots decide it's time to march on London. The English army heads north to stop them and MI6 send Harry Lampeter to report on the hostilities. General Malina’s American peacekeepers arrive as the battle for York begins. In between amorous entanglements, Harry discovers the Americans have a hidden agenda: the invasion of Europe. Meanwhile, Harry’s friend, Telford Stephenson, has joined the Scottish Air Force and is enjoying his own adventures.
Wisps of steam, a pair of erotic dancers, a cat called Nigel, and the distant skirl of bagpipes all add color to Harry Lampeter’s first anarchic adventure.

A good start for a new series.

I enjoyed this book. Good characters, good action, good pace, well narrated. Well worth a listen.
My major criticism would be that it didn't have enough world-building for my tastes. I wanted more of the history how things came to be how they are. It didn't stop me enjoying the story, but it did mean that I didn't enjoy it as much as I might have...
Edit: I would recommend reading the prequel "The Digital Meltdown" first. Much more world-building in there,

Good fun Thirty-Nine Steps stuff
Really, I would have gone with 4.5. It was fun, a bit implausible in parts but if you like the atmosphere of John Buchan stuff (and I do), then it's great stuff. I'm not sure that a de-industrialised future would look like this, but if you can suspend your disbelief there is some sly humour looking back at our own era, which I appreciated.

Great fun story
In a future without plastic, the world has entered a new steam age. Harry Lampeter comes to the attention of MI6 and is sent north to spy on the Scottish Invasion of England, then the American peacekeepers arrive. This is a fascination entertaining steam punk adventure with a light hearted style, satirical wit and some really nice touches. Well written with fun characters. I like Harry's sense of humour and attitude. Telford's more restrained ~Scottish personality, Love Harry's boss. A super start to a series that I will be following with interest I haver already bought the next one. The narrator is great, has a excellent easy to listen to voice and a good range. Hugely enjoyable. I Received a complimentary copy from the author and am leaving a honest voluntary review

Unique twist on dystopian fiction!
Roger Ley has created a clever little masterpiece in this story! His Steampunk world involving war, spy craft and debauchery is quite entertaining. Paired with Craig Bowles as Narrator ( one of my absolute favorite narrators) , it is simple the perfect way to spend an afternoon!
Don’t be fooled by the short length of the story! At no point is it rushed or cut short. I am very happy to have have spent my time with Harry Lampeter!

awesome!
i wasn't sure what to expect as this isn't a genre I normally go for but was decided to give it a listen.
Great story line and captivating from the offset. alot of places recognised being scottish and the only thing I felt let this down as the narrator miss saying scottish towns.
but overall an interesting story and definitely worth a read if your interested in steampunk or alternative history.

great listen
ok really enjoyed this second book in this series the relationship between the two main characters has been a joy to listen to. I was in stitches with the references to Scottish politics an political figures I look forward to seeing what else these guys get up to. well worth a credit great easy to listen to book

Brilliantly believable
How do you know when you're totally invested in a book? Let me tell you how it feels for me. I was listening to Graig Bowles narrating Harry Lampeter and the War with Scotland by Roger Ley and I was grinning away at Harry's shenanigans. At one stage, Harry's friends Felicity and Telford are driving through my home town and I thought to myself, "if only I'd known, they could have popped in for tea". Obviously I know they're not real and more than the state of the world in Mr Ley's brilliant series is real - except ....! Quite frankly it's all very credible and if I want to be upset that Harry Lampeter's friends didn't stop in when they were passing, then so be it. I'm a HUGE fan of Roger's writing, and Graig's narration and can't wait for the next book.

Quirky and original
Very enjoyable light-hearted sattire, backed by an original story with good humour, interesting characters and actiuon throughout. Perfectly performed too. I look forward to more Harry Lampeter.
