About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Over 1 million Discworld audiobooks sold – discover the extraordinary universe of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld like never before.

'Sorry?' said Carrot. If it's just a thing, how can it commit murder? A sword is a thing' - he drew his own sword; it made an almost silken sound - 'and of course you can't blame a sword if someone thrust it at you, sir.'

For Commander Vimes, Head of Ankh-Morpork City Watch, life consists of troubling times, linked together by...well, more troubling times.

Right now, it's the latter. There's a werewolf with pre-lunar tension in the city, and a dwarf with attitude and a golem who's begun to think for itself, but that's just ordinary trouble. The real problem is more puzzling - people are being murdered, but there's no trace of anything alive having been at the crime scene.

So Vimes not only has to find out whodunit, but howdunit too. He's not even sure what they dun. But soon as he knows what the questions are, he's going to want some answers.

The Discworld novels can be read in any order but Feet of Clay is the third book in the City Watch series.

Critic reviews

'The work of a prolific humorist at his best'
'Like most true originals, Pratchett defies categorisation...Deliciously and amiably dotty...Driven by Swiftian logic and equally intellectually inventive'
'Fantastical, inventive and finally serious...It's enjoyable as crime fiction, but the real attraction is the laughter waiting to be uncovered on each page'

If you already have bought these books you won’t be disappointed by Jon Culshaw, quite the opposite. He’s absolutely brilliant narrating these books and bringing the night watch to life in a way I didn’t think was possible.

Brilliant!

I have been a fan of Pratchett for years since I found Lords and Ladies in a small bookshop down a lane when I was about 12. I love audiobooks and I’ve listened to all the Stephen Briggs versions. These versions are good and I am enjoying them but the only thing that spoils it for me is that Jon Culshaw frequently gets the inflections wrong in some sentences. He stresses the wrong word or puts on the wrong emphasis. In this book Vimes says the word ‘Clue’ in a disgusted way but the narrator says ‘Clue’ in a completely different tone changing the way it comes across. It jars with the way it’s written. He does this frequently. Another example is the sentence ‘This time he was going to think’ with the stress in the book on ‘think’. But the narrator puts the stress on ‘he’ changing the sentence. It just throws me out of the zone. Also the barman has a high squeaky voice but then the book reads ‘he said, in a low rolling voice’. That doesn’t work at all. Other than that I enjoy the pacing and the voices and maybe I’m being picky but once I’m in a zone and listening it doesn’t take much to throw me out of it.

His delivery is better than in the first book. He’s even change the voices of some the the characters, eg, Detritus, Nobby.
However, I still feel his bland and insipid delivery is not compatible with TP's brand of fun and humour - laugh out loud, tongue in cheek, subtle and clever ….
Stephen Fry would have been ideal as narrator for this series.
Having read some of the rave reviews re Culshaw's narration, I thought I should persevere. 3 books ought to be enough for me to decide. It’s back to the old recordings for me, I’m afraid.

Culshaw still not my cup of tea..

Of course the story and writing are a work of genius. I’m so glad that John Culshaw brings it to life perfectly.

It’s an absolute delight to listen to Jon Culshaw breath life into Mr Pratchett’s works. He really does get the characters and the nuance of the dialogue.
I really enjoy these audios and have always loved the watch from the beginning.
