About this listen

I’ve loved Calder Cruz from the moment he taught me how to fly. Racing down a mountain and giving me the release I so desperately needed. My understanding. My safe space.

Hadley has fought for a life of her own ever since her sister’s kidnapping. When she was drowning in expectations and family pressures, Calder was always the one who understood her.

Until one night changed it all. From best friends to strangers in a single breath.

She’s like a fire that lives inside me. Even when I thought it was all burned out, there were still embers that lived in my bones.

Calder knows what it’s like to almost lose the people he loves most. He’ll never make that kind of mistake again. Working at the fire station and taking care of his daughters are the only things he needs.

All it takes is a single moment to make him realize how wrong he is. A split second of coming close to losing the woman he has always loved.

But as long-buried embers light anew, there are those who lurk in the shadows. And they’ll do whatever it takes to extinguish that flame for good....

I loved this sweet and swoony romance

I loved this sweet and swoony romance. The story is the second standalone in the Tattered and Torn series.

Hadley is a bit of an adrenaline junkie which drives her mom crazy. Both her mom and Calder seem to want to keep her in a bubble and protected from any chance of danger.

“You deserve better. Someone who appreciates you for who you are and doesn’t try to force you to be someone you’re not.”

Calder is fighting his own demons and only wants to keep the people in his life safe. He has been holding Hadley at a distance, keeping her in the friend zone.

“It seemed as if a force born of the two of us carried me to him, a creation that would only ever be ours. My hands found his, and all felt right in the world.”

Falling Embers combines suspense, mystery, second chance swoony romance, a smokin’ hot firefighter single dad of two cute kiddos, and an emotional storyline that will pull you right in and won’t let go.

“I’ve loved you forever.”
His eyes glistened with unshed tears. “Always have, always will.”

I listened to most of this book on audio and the awesome narration only added another dimension to an already wonderful story.

Heartbreaking. Emotional. Beautiful.

Another wonderful story from Catherine Cowles.

I absolutely adore Calder and Hadley. And of course, Calder’s twin daughters. This was such a wonderful story, but it had some heartbreaking and emotional moments along with the romance, drama and suspense. It was so good, I didn’t want it to end.

This story was narrated beautifully by Vanessa Edwin and Joe Arden. Both narrator’s did a wonderful job in bringing the characters to life. Brilliant narration by both.

‘Falling Embers’ is the second book in the Tattered and Torn Series.

Shiloh & Caldor!

Every time. That is how many times Catherine Cowles draws me into her worlds and keeps me captivated. This story is an easy one to fall into. Single dad of twins, firefighter, yes, I am in! But it's not just the hero that pulls me. It's the stories. Hadley has had it tough. After her sister Shiloh's kidnapping, her parents began smothering her. That is until her brother's best friend, Caldor showed her how to blow off steam. And the adrenaline junkie was born. She and Caldor share a mutual attraction, but he's her brother's best friend. There are boundaries. Until danger shakes some sense into Caldor. Now with threats coming in through her Instagram account, and her mothers incessant abuse regarding her dangerous life, Hadley is at her wits end. Will she and Caldor find their happily ever after? Cowles gives us so much in this story. From Hadley's childhood to the present, friends and adventures, to Caldor's heartache, fear and protectiveness with his own kids. It's full of realistic family problems and current relevant issues including that of social media. I love the way it has just the right amount of angst, a thrilling suspenseful plot and a love story to boot! It's a wonderful listen.

And to make it even better, Joe Arden and Vanessa Edwin bring it all to life! This team is so good! Arden plays the broody Caldor, with his impossibly warm heart. He can make us feel it all just with an inflection! Edwin gives us Hadley, spunky, adventurous and full of love. Each scene is genuine, from parent voices to kids, we are treated to an amazing performance.

I love this series.

I am absolutely loving the Tattered & Torn series Catherine has given us so far.

I had the opportunity to listen to the audio book, which I did in tandem with the read, Jo Arden and Vanessa Edwin did a fantastic job.

Falling Embers just ramped the series up with this heartbreakingly beautiful story, it was full of twists and turns throughout!

Catherine knows how to reel us in, I was already on the edge for this paring after Tattered Stars, there was chemistry flowing off them, but we had no idea what their back story was. Catherine gave them a good one. Plus I friggin love Birdie and Sage.

Yet again what’s not to love, all bases covered for me, romance, heartbreak, angst, plot twists and turns, and a HEA!

I didn’t want this to end such a good read.

🎧 AUDIO REVIEW 🎧

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Really loved Hadley and Calder story. They are definitely one of my favourite couples in the series.

I loved how truthful she was and supportive of her family at the same time.

I loved how it had a twist, again I did figure it out just in time but still when listening your still shocked.

Love a single dad romance and this one no different, the kids are adorable.

Definitely recommend.

Amazing Audio Adaptation

The second book in Catherine Cowles Tattered & Torn series, Falling Embers is another amazing friends to lovers, romantic suspense novel that swept me away from the opening chapter. Top marks to Joe Arden and Vanessa Edwin for doing such a fantastic job giving voice to Cruz and Hadley. They managed to imbue all the emotions of the story into the characters while slipping seamlessly between the male/female parts. Thank you for sweeping this listener away from her daily work commute to the scenic mountain town of Wolf Gap where danger lurks beneath the surface for Hadley just as she finally finds happiness with the only man she has ever loved.

Breathtakingly beautiful small-town romance

Okay, so I’m embarrassed to admit that until this title I had never read/listened to a Catherine Cowles book and oh my goodness, I’ve been missing an absolute treat! I’m looking forward to getting lost in more small-town romances from this fabulous author.
Falling Embers is book two in the Tattered and Torn series and is the story of Hadley Easton and Calder Cruz.
My heart broke for sweet Hadley and all she endured throughout this story. She suffered the most out of her siblings because of her sisters kidnapping years earlier. Hadley has been prevented from experiencing life due to her family’s irrational fear. Hadley was unable to be who she truly is and live her life to its fullest potential without repercussions. The only person who saw her and her needs was Calder, her brother’s best friend. He showed her how to live, how to feel and how to chase the stars and the high of an adrenaline rush. He gave her an outlet to forget the cruel words thrown at her by a woman who should love her unconditionally but has put restrictions on that love. However, tragedy struck, and Calder’s world almost came crashing down around him which caused him to abandon Hads and anything that can remotely be seen as a little dangerous.
Calder is a hero firefighter and single father to twin girls Birdie and Sage. Due to an accident years previous that almost cost him his precious daughters, Calder has sole custody of the twins and even though he backs aways from Hads, she loves the girls so helps out and has a fantastic relationship with them. Calder begins to see Hads in a new light when she risks her life to save an accident victim as part of her job as an EMT and Calder in turn then had to rescue her.
The amazingly talented Joe Arden and Vanessa Edwin narrate this phenomenal book. Mr Arden has a way of performing the raw, gritty characters that have you feeling every emotion, plus no one holds a candle to him when it comes to children’s voices, they are just incredible. Ms Edwin truly is remarkable at her craft. I felt everything Hads was feeling. Vanessa portrayed her vulnerabilities, her need to not let her family down but also her wants and desires to be free and chase that high.
Ms Cowles is an incredibly talented writer who has a way of making her readers fully immerse themselves in the story, feel everything and have you on the edge of your seat in suspense, I was captivated from start to finish. I couldn’t have loved this anymore and am now looking forward to sweet Addies story in book three of this series.

Amazing book

Oh my! What an emotional and heartbreaking story. This book had it all. Drama, suspense and intrigue. I wasn’t sure what Hadley and Calder’s backstory was and I couldn’t have guessed it if I’d tried. It was definitely different than I expected but in a great way. The friendship that turned to love altho neither knew, was magical. I adored the twins! The supporting cast as always was great. Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen the book took another turn to keep you guessing. Wonderfully written with heart and lots of love. I’m so excited for the next book now. I can’t wait to see what extraordinary storyline Ms Cowles will deliver next. Each book this author writes is suspenseful and also a wonderful love story. The narration was spot on too. I think it enhances my experience of the story immensely. Wonderful narration
