About this listen

The only way to fall in love is to take the first step.

For Caleb, that first step leads to fear, violence, and the death of the only boy he’s ever loved. He won’t—can’t—admit who he is to himself. How could he ever share his deepest secrets with someone else?

Josaiah has known he was gay since he was seven. He’s experienced in more ways than one—with sex, with other men, and as a dominant. But love is something he can’t accept or give, and he’s walled himself off from any kind of affection.

Can Caleb confront his ghosts and learn to love himself and his new dom? Will Josaiah remember how to love and be loved in turn? As Caleb and Josaiah take the first few steps toward each other, their pasts threaten to overwhelm their future.

Drama junkies will love this!

An angsty gay club scene roller coaster! When UBER driver Caleb was young, he witnessed something that left him deeply and pathologically closeted and he finds it hard to control his anger, aggression, and fear around other gay guys. Josaiah is a blind, out and proud, gay man who doesn’t believe in love and uses his persona as a dom to control others so they don’t get too close. The two men are drawn to each other but with so much baggage it was never going to be a smooth ride and there are a lot of emotional scenes and walking away before they get their HEA. It’s a decent debut novel with two really fleshed-out characters, but I found it a frustrating read. Every time we think the guys have finally got their act together, someone blows another gasket. Is BDSM-as-therapy really going to help Caleb? Probably not, the guys break the record for bad decision-making so it’s high drama with too much alcohol, serial anonymous hookups, tears, yelling and not one but two medical emergencies. Richard Pendragon narrates the audiobook competently.

Two dysfunctional men

We first meet Caleb, who is holding so much deep inside him that it comes out as hatred towards others.

Josaiah is blind and a Dom. However, he seems to be on a one-way course to sleep with every man he comes across and hurt those close to him.

This book shouldn't work on paper as the two characters are so hurt and dysfunctional that no one could get through to them. But they broke down the barriers, rough, brutal and heartache.

The narration of this book was good; my first narration by Richard Pendragon and I enjoyed his voice. However, like usual, I sped up the narration on audible to 1.45.

Taking Steps Towards Change.

MM, BDSM, Contemporary, Romance. A stand-alone read with lots of angst throughout and BDSM sex scenes as both characters struggle with other issues from their pasts that have shaped how they are now. Great potential but for me the narration felt flat and this affected my overall enjoyment.

Claim Me, Love Me

This was an interesting listen with a lot of potential. I’m torn on this one. I think there’s a good story with some issues. Overall, it’s an okay listen with okay narration (I speed up as I am prone to do.) I’m hesitant to say too much as it could very well be me and my mood.

Not bad…

This is the first audiobook I’ve listened to by Richard Pendragon (AFAIK, but his voice sounds really familiar) and I understand that it’s the first book written by Jaiyde Thomas. As a first effort I thought the writing was not bad but it was a bit choppy for me in places. I’m sure her writing will improve as time goes on. The story is set in my home town and I didn’t notice any glaring errors in the description of the various real-life places mentioned – always a good thing. The narration really didn’t work too well for me. It’s hard to put my finger on it but I just didn’t seem to hear/feel the emotions that I believe the author intended us to feel and that impacted my enjoyment of the story.

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.
