Summary

Jody White’s eighteenth year of life filled his heart with young love–only to break him apart. Diagnosed with a rare form of Acute Leukaemia, he was given just two weeks to live.

With intelligence, nuance, and sensitivity, Jody White draws the listener into the intimate whirlwind of treatment that followed. The stylistically golden story captivates and inspires, gathering wisdom out of what was a dark, dark time. A fascinating and inventive must-listen, this deeply moving memoir masterfully challenges some of the received wisdoms on how illness should be written. Chimera is an absolutely inspiring story of strength and hope with something for everyone.

Absolutely loved it.

I finished this audiobook in record time, I enjoyed it so much. Beautiful and heart-wrenching in equal measure, this is a brutally honest and yet hopeful story of Jody’s experience of leukaemia. Framed by the mythic ‘heroes journey’ it charts both Jody’s physical and inner-world journeys as he faces death at the age of 18, as well as the awkwardness of his reintegration into normal life as he recovers. I found the writing compelling and imaginative, and very easy to relate to. The story, interlaced with psychedelic glimpses of dreamlike states and encounters with his disease, is incredibly beautiful. I also really enjoyed Jody’s narration, which was easy listening but animated and accessible. 100% recommended!

Inspiring Story With Transformational Gifts

I eagerly awaited for the audio version of this book to come out and it truly did deliver as I gobbled through the whole thing in just under 2 days. Jody beautiful shares his heartbreaking yet love-filled story of contracting Leukaemia as a teenager and the extraordinary experiences, revelations and discoveries he found along his intense journey of transformation.

More than a story about a brush with death, throughout the book Jody generously shares an inspiring elixir of ideas, thoughts and perspectives around healing, the role of emotions, human connection, cultural taboos and so much more with references to research and new scientific discoveries that will-you-on to discover more. Infectiously passionate in the best kind of way.

I highly recommend this Book! Truthfully it touched my heart in more ways than one with my own family history and personal journey I found there were invaluable gifts imparted along the way and for this and the honesty in his work I am grateful to Jody for writing (and Reading!) this Extraordinary book.

Life changing!

Thank you Jody for so beautifully and vividly sharing your epic story.
I thoroughly recommend this book! It has the potential to revolutionise your outlook on life. It is truly inspiring and Jody’s writing is insightful on a wide variety of intriguing topics when describing what helped him on his journey. It is also a delightfully easy read for such a heavy subject in that he has perfectly balanced humour with the most challenging parts of human experience.
More books please Jody!

It surprised me how much I got out of this book

It helped me understand what my parents went through when nursing a family member when I was too young to fully comprehend...which is exactly what I expected.

What I didn't expect was the useful insights gained from the deeply honest self-reflection and analysis by the author of his own actions, both positive & negative, and how they affected the outcome, and perhaps as equally important, the people around him.

I guess I didn't really expect a straightforward story for such an ordeal, but the exploration of the meta-physical, microbiology, self-belief and the spiritual was a fascinating layer to the story. Particularly given that it was all grounded in science and, critically (as the book explains), the reality of the situation.

The story is one thing, I now know how it starts and ends, but it's wisdom & the insights that truly stuck as I've been able to apply them in my own life, and it's those that will encourage me to listen again.
