Summary

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

BOOK OF THE YEAR AT THE BRITISH BOOK AWARDS

SHORTLISTED FOR THE COSTA FIRST NOVEL AWARD

LONGLISTED FOR THE WOMEN'S PRIZE FOR FICTION

'Brilliant, timely, funny, heartbreaking' Jojo Moyes

'A must-read novel about sex, selfhood, and the best friendships that get us through it all' Candace Bushnell, author of Sex and the City

Queenie is a twenty-five-year-old Black woman living in south London, straddling Jamaican and British culture whilst slotting neatly into neither. She works at a national newspaper where she's constantly forced to compare herself to her white, middle-class peers, and beg to write about Black Lives Matter. After a messy break up from her long-term white boyfriend, Queenie finds herself seeking comfort in all the wrong places.

As Queenie veers from one regrettable decision to another, she finds herself wondering, What are you doing? Why are you doing it? Who do you want to be? - the questions that every woman today must face in a world that keeps trying to provide the answers for them.

A darkly comic and bitingly subversive take on life, love, race and family, Queenie will have you nodding in recognition, crying in solidarity and rooting for this unforgettable character every step of the way. A disarmingly honest, boldly political and truly inclusive tale that will speak to anyone who has gone looking for love and acceptance and found something very different in its place.

Honest and real

Loved this book. I think many women would relate to it in this modern day world, regardless of your race. I really enjoyed it and the voice actor was good and gave a good feel for thr characters cultural backgrounds.

outstanding must read

This book brought back to my teens in South London the voices the cleanliness, friendships and race. a hard lesson in racsism feminism and intersectionality. A MUST READ for any anti-racsist and those working toward true allyship.

In the middle I had to struggle

I struggled with the book half way through, but hang in there. There are reasons, and for me the struggle were part of my experience in the end. I really liked it.

life of a young black women trying to understand

I enjoyed this book it was funny at times sad, complicated a woman who thought she was on the right track only to find that her past could not be forgotten she had to deal with it and find out why she had a compulsion to sabotage her life when things went well. Her life seemed to be falling apart but she will survive.

A great listen

So many things to relate to, so many things that I have learnt.
I felt the part of Queenie, so well was she written, like no other that I’ve read recently.
I would recommend this for anyone wanting to connect with female adulthood and anyone wanting to understand it. Will eagerly await my next listen from the author!
Great narration too - spot on.
