About this listen
A mysterious shipwreck could unlock ancient powers… or send her to a watery grave.
Targa MacAuley feels more at home on dry land than in the watery realm of her mermaid ancestors. After 17 years on solid ground, she fears she’ll never grow into the creature her mother hoped she’d become. To keep her mom’s homesickness and true identity under wraps, Targa signs on for a mysterious salvage dive in the Baltic Sea.
Her plan to blend in with the rest of the crew is spoiled when she catches the eye of a handsome local. A freak accident and a strange connection to the ancient shipwreck below attract even more unwanted attention. With both her mom’s secret—and her life—in danger, Targa must finally find the courage to unleash the currents surging deep within.
Born of Water is the first book in The Elemental Origins Series, and won the Gold Medal in the Readers’ Favorite Awards in Young Adult Fantasy. If you like new twists on mermaid lore, simmering romance, and close-knit mother-daughter bonds, then you’ll love A.L. Knorr’s nautical adventure. Embark on a deeper dive into the story's lore with The Wreck of Sybellen, a companion novel included with the book.

Great mermaid story
A great mermaid story with some nice history behind it, I love that it's a present day story and had a great theme.

Great start to a series
Targa is the daughter of a mermaid. Her mother, Mira, is disappointed that Targa is not a mermaid and is enduring living on land for her daughter - if her child had been a boy, she would have left him behind on land so that she could return to the seas.
During the summer holidays, the company Mira works for as a salvage diver, has a commission to find the wreck of a ship in the Baltic Sea. She takes Targa with her. There are a few twists in this - which I won't reveal.
Whilst there, Targa meets Anthony, who works for the man who has employed Mira's company. One day, whilst Targa and Anthony are out on a boat, the come into difficulties and are thrown into the sea. Targa's natural mermaid nature emerges and she saves Anthony from drowning.
Later in the book, we find out that Targa is a very powerful mermaid - an Elemental.
Although the book ends abruptly, there is a reason for this, and you will have to listen to the next books for the continuance of Targa's story, along with the other Elementals.
This is a very good coming-of-age book and Gabra Zackman does a very good job of narrating the story.
I'm now off to listen to the next book in the series.

Born of Water
I've had Born of Water for some time, but I was hesitant to read it for fear of being let down. I have to say I am disappointed in myself for waiting so long. Born of Water was a well-done mermaid/siren story. The ending was a bit abrupt, and it left me with some unanswered questions, not a lot of them. It is a series, so the questions may get answered later. The lead character is incredible; she's relatable and likable. The romance developed at a natural and realistic pace.
I look forward to the next book in the series because I'm sure it will be as fantastic as this one.

Simply love the story
Started one of the audio books from
This author by mistake and ended up buying everything I could find. She has an incredible imagination and I loved escaping reality into her made up worlds! There is not a book from A.L. Knorr you would regret getting. Once you like one, you love them all!

Brilliant coming-of-age story
I read these books before I listened to them, so it was really nice to hear it brought to life so well. Even as an adult there is still something rather nice about having a story read to you!
The story is about a young girl who is the daughter of a siren, and about the twists and turns in her own tale as she grows older and becomes a young adult; There is magic, romance, mystery, and excitement as the story develops, eventually intertwining with the stories of her friends as well. The entire series is worth reading, and if this recording is anything to go by, listening to it as well!

Good!
I liked the story, it did go on in some places but I did enjoy it. What I didn't like was the ending. Felt like it cut off abruptly. Apart from that I enjoyed it.
