About this listen

The world’s greatest thriller writers prove they’re up to a unique challenge in this action-packed, audio-original collection.

It all started with a simple, yet sneakily difficult challenge from global best-selling author Harlan Coben: Pick a bird of prey, then use it as the inspiration for a brand-new story.

The response from some of the best writers on the planet: Game on!

The result: Eleven stories that are twisty, scary, surprising and bursting with imagination. An egg worth more than its weight in gold. A mysterious operative known only as Owl. An eagle-watcher who sees more than she should. Even a story that somehow places the Maltese Falcon in a nursing home.

Birds of Prey: The Harlan Coben Challenge is a highly bingeable audiobook that’s a treat for thriller fans.

Introduced by Harlan Coben, Birds of Prey features these stories:

  • “The Coffin Bearer” by Tess Gerritsen
  • “Precious Cargo” by C.J. Box
  • “Owl” by Kathy Reichs
  • “Kudzu” by Ace Atkins
  • “Predator or Prey?” by Heather Graham
  • “Silent as a Shadow” by S.A. Cosby
  • “Jail Birds” by Hank Phillippi Ryan
  • “The Falcon” by Robert Dugoni
  • “Watchers” by Allison Brennan
  • “Red of Beak and Claw” by Gregg Hurwitz
  • “Hawkshaw Hunting” by Kelley Armstrong

Birds of Prey: The Harlan Coben Challenge was created with International Thriller Writers (ITW). C.J. Box served as project editor.

The different styles of the writers was really interesting to hear simultaneously

I enjoyed all but one of the stories so a great outcome as I don’t usually enjoy short stories. All but one kept me captivated. I didn’t enjoy the story about the vampire bird, neither the content nor the writing style.

good read

some stories were better than others but it was an interesting book, I believe it was a great challenge and seeing how different writies came up with ideas was cool experience.

Worth a listen

Some stories were better than others but all in all I enjoyed it.

The first and second were possibly the best for me.

Brilliant anthology

An excellent collection of short stories loosely based around birds of prey. All are well written and well narrated. I couldn't pick a best or worst story from the collection as all are entertaining. The vampire story by Gregg Hurwitz started off puzzling me until I realised what he was talking about and then it all made a scary kind of sense. Very clever.

If you like anthologies this one is a winner.

Brilliant collection of work from major authors !

Great Collection, as with all short stories some are more to your liking than others but a great selection from top notch authors.

What utter clap trap

The introduction was enough to put me off but had to keep listening before I could write a review.
I can see why the book was free, no one in their right mind would buy it.

awful

I only got this book because it was free. The stories are awful, predictable and do not make sense in places. The foreword by Harlan himself is equally awful. Only listened to the first few books, couldn't bear anymore.

i enjoyed a couple of the stories but some were awful! the challenge wasnt really even met by most but had a tenuous link to birds of prey or just birds!
