Summary

A simple mission. A battle for their lives.

It is 1667, and the war between the Dutch and the English continues apace. Sir Francis Courtney, his son Hal and their crew are carried around the southern tip of the African colonies by the good ship Lady Edwina, licensed to attack and seize the treasure-laden ships of the Dutch East India company. When they capture a Dutch trader and hold the passengers to ransom, Sir Francis hopes only for a good price and a small sense of satisfaction.

But this is unlawful territory they sail in. An unexpected betrayal will mean the men on board will face greater peril than they have ever faced before - and many good men may never see home again....

A Courtney Series adventure - book 1 in the Birds of Prey trilogy.

Great Epic story

Loved the story so detailed, really took me on a roller coaster on the open seas. So many twists and turns. I thought the narrator did a great job.

A Good Yarn

A most enjoyable book if you like sea-faring antics and treks in Africa. Some of the 'events' are a bit fantastic and the book has a number of predictable cliches in it. However, it's very well read by Sean Barrett and a decent pace is maintained throughout.

One of the best swash bucklers ever!

I have read this book 20 times so far and was very pleased with the narration to my first audio version of my favourite book growing up. Very highly recommended.

Masterpiece!

Birds Of Prey charts the thrilling tale of an English pirate, Sir Francis Courtney, who was the scourge of the Dutch shipping while the two countries were at war. This breathtaking tale spans the early South African settlement at Cape Town with its Hottentots and the Indonesian slaves up to Ethiopia fighting a religious war with the Arabs. It has some of the most memorable characters in the Wilbur Smith world with favourites like Hal, Aboli and Big Daniel. The villains include the mesmerizingly beautiful Katinka who seduces and enchants any man she wants and Slow John, an executioner who terrifies even the most hardened individual. There is also a Dutch adversary, Colonel Shroeder, who is Hal's nemesis and the treacherous Buzzard. I loved the description of the unspoilt African bush with its abundant game personifying the early garden of Eden.
Wilbur Smith sets the standard for historical thrillers that other authors can only dream of aspiring to.
This is one of Wilbur's classics and an unforgettable tale.

adventure on the seas

having read this in paperback years ago I couldn't wait to listen to it on audible.

I wasn't disappointed as Sean Barrett brought all the characters to life more than a paperback could ever do.

His ability to give all these people a voice of their own isn't a surprise after listening to narration of other Wilbur Smith books.

The story is a great adventure on the seas and Wilbur Smith writes so that you are almost there as he does in all his books.

Great story and you will not be disappointed.
