About this listen

National service kills 50 percent of Edin's 18-year-olds. For most, survival is the goal. For Spike and Matilda, it's just the beginning....

In the walled city of Edin, Spike's carefree childhood has always had an end date. His protection from the wasteland of death on the outside is about to change on his 18th birthday. But while only half of the cadets survive their mandatory time on national service, Spike's goal goes far beyond making it out alive. He's betting everything on being chosen as the top candidate, rising to the role of Protector, and securing a spot beside his beautiful best friend.…

The only thing Matilda wants more than Spike's success is to keep her family safe. But as she shows support for the boy she loves, she wishes national service didn't force her to leave her vulnerable brother behind. Matilda understands that Edin's rules will only let her and Spike be together if he becomes the next Protector, but when a devious rival decimates his odds, she doubts both their gamble and her feelings….

To become the last cadet standing, Spike must learn to kill the diseased, control his emotions, and become the best in a sea of worthier candidates. Will Matilda and Spike achieve the impossible beyond the city walls, or will they join the growing pile of corpses on the outside?

Great story

Whilst the concept of a zombie apocalypse is not particularly novel, the ideas in the story were different enough to make it interesting (though a little implausible that no-one had ever questioned what was going and challenged it, on to be honest).

Enjoyed enough to download books 4-6 to see how it continues and ends.

not great. lacked character development and pace

is for more of a young adult audience , very simplistic, little depth of character and gave up after a couple of hours. couldn't connect with anyone and lost interest.

this is a great book but

only star this book of you go to the last books 13-15 and can get on with them as for me that has ruined all this book as the narrator in this really bought the book to live, and now i can't finish the story as the last ones is so tinie sounding and has no personality for me it's that bag I can't listen to enough of it to leave a review of how bad it is on its own title so putting the warning here before like me you get in to it to find you can't find out what happened

Small doses only

The idea for this book is very promising. I quite enjoyed the concept of the story, but there was far too much repetition going over and over the same subject again got cringe worthy and some phrases like my love became really irritating. I don’t think I’ll continue with this series.
