117: Veganism, Purpose, and Spirituality: How Karen Hoyos Aligns Actions with a Life of Meaning

  • Summary

  • Adopting a vegan lifestyle can do more than improve your health and the planet—it can deepen your spiritual connection and clarity. Karen Hoyos, a transformational leader, speaker, and author, has embraced veganism not just as a diet, but as a profound way to align her actions with her purpose and values. On the NHA Health Science Podcast, hosted by Dr. Frank Sabatino, Karen shared how her 20 years as a vegan have been integral to her personal healing, spiritual growth, and transformational work with others.

    Healing Trauma to Find Purpose

Karen’s journey toward clarity and purpose began with a need to heal her own trauma. Growing up in Colombia, she witnessed domestic violence within her family, a cycle that left deep emotional scars. Moving to the United States as a young mother marked a turning point. Determined to leave behind the pain of her past, Karen sought out personal development and spiritual growth.

Through mentors like Tony Robbins and her meditation teacher, she began addressing the roots of her trauma. “Until we heal our past, it manifests in our relationships, health, and even financial struggles,” Karen explains. Healing, she emphasizes, is about moving from victimhood to empowerment, understanding the unconscious patterns that perpetuate pain, and choosing to grow beyond them.

Veganism as a Path to Alignment

Karen’s introduction to veganism came through her spiritual practice. Her meditation teacher emphasized the connection between diet and consciousness, opening Karen’s eyes to how food impacts energy and clarity. After watching the documentary Earthlings, Karen committed fully to a plant-based lifestyle, driven by compassion for animals, concern for the planet, and her own spiritual alignment.

For Karen, veganism represents congruence—living in alignment with her values. “You cannot hurt and do good at the same time,” she explains. This alignment has become the foundation of her transformational work, where she teaches others to live authentically by harmonizing their actions with their deeper purpose.
