Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

In the year before The Phantom Menace, Yoda, Mace Windu, and the entire Jedi Council confront a galaxy on the brink of change.

The Jedi have always traveled the stars, defending peace and justice across the galaxy. But, the galaxy is changing, and along with it, the Jedi Order. More and more, the Order finds itself focused on the future of the Republic, secluded on Coruscant, where the twelve members of the Jedi Council weigh crises on a galactic scale.

As yet another Jedi Outpost leftover from the Republic’s golden age is set to be decommissioned on the planet Kwenn, Qui-Gon Jinn challenges the Council about the increasing isolation of the Order. Mace Windu suggests a bold response: all twelve Jedi Masters will embark on a goodwill mission to help the planet, and remind the people of the galaxy that the Jedi remain as stalwart and present as they have been across the ages.

But the arrival of the Jedi leadership is not seen by all as a cause for celebration. Warring pirate factions have infested the sector in the increasing absence of the Jedi. To maintain their dominance, the pirates unite, intent on assassinating the Council. And they are willing to destroy countless innocent lives to secure their power.

Cut off from Coruscant, the Jedi Masters must reckon with an unwelcome truth: that while no one thinks more about the future than the Jedi Council, nobody needs their help more than those living in the present.

Mark Thompson is phenomenal

MT makes these books soooo much better. He’s the go to.

The story was good fun. Quite enjoyed it. Nice little episode pre TPM. I would recommend it. Not ground breaking good but it’s good. 3 stars

Better than some of the THR stuff they’re bringing out

expected more... something else

so i also was excited to start with this story, and i am sad to admit that about half way i realized that is wasn't going to be what i hoped for. it is an interesting time period and it could have been a more deeper story about the jedi but is seemed this is a "story of the week" kind of book. I don't think the author is to blame, nor marc thompson who like always does a great job. This book has written Disney al over it in the worst way. I am a big fan of legends as well as canon ( huge high republic fan ) and it feels like they wanted to put a whole high republic phase in just 1 book.

The Prequel to the prequels

It is so nice to have a novel like this showing the Jedi in their normal ways, before the Sith start meddling?

Enjoyable story, great character development

I’m a huge Prequels fan, so any time I get to spend in this era is hugely satisfying for me. It’s not JJM’s best story in the Star Wars universe (see Kenobi for that) but I enjoyed it nonetheless. He did a great job at fleshing out all the Jedi council members and the story did have some interesting twists. Marc Thompson, as always, did a fantastic job with his performance. I really liked his Qui-Gon!

Marc Thompson brings a brilliant book to even more life

This was such a great, pirate filled adventure, with the full Jedi Council on a journey to help a planet some had once visited 200 years earlier.
what really makes this brilliant however, is MT'S narration.
Every single character sounds like you've stepped out of the book and into the prequels, and it's divine

Marc Thompson Is Incredible

The story was fantastic but as always Marc Thompson delivers again. Incredible voice acting and just enhancing the story through this is unbelievable. Cherish this gem

Good prequel.

Overall I think this is a good story. It’s a slow burner and can take a little while to get going. The use of secondary characters adds to the feel of the universe.

An Interesting Look at the Council

While not the greatest story Star Wars has ever told, if you are interested in getting to know the Jedi Council from Phantom Menace, I would highly recommend this. The structure can feel a bit disjointed at times, but this allows for more time exploring each Jedi. Marc Thompson's narration is, as always, phenomenal.
