About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

In this bestselling audiobook read by the author, Gary Stevenson relives his time on the trading floor with raw honesty, gritty humour and true conviction.

An outrageous, white-knuckle journey to the dark heart of an intoxicating world - from someone who survived the trading game and then blew it all wide open

Ever since he was a kid, kicking broken footballs on the streets of East London in the shadow of Canary Wharf's skyscrapers, Gary wanted something better. Something a whole lot bigger.

Then he won a competition run by a bank: 'The Trading Game'. The prize: a golden ticket to a new life, as the youngest trader in the whole city. A place where you could make more money than you'd ever imagined. Where your colleagues are dysfunctional maths geniuses, overfed public schoolboys and borderline psychopaths, yet they start to feel like family. Where soon you're the bank's most profitable trader, dealing in nearly a trillion dollars. A day. Where you dream of numbers in your sleep - and then stop sleeping at all.

But what happens when winning starts to feel like losing? When the easiest way to make money is to bet on millions becoming poorer and poorer - and, as the economy starts slipping off a precipice, your own sanity starts slipping with it? You want to stop, but you can't. Because nobody ever leaves.

Would you stick, or quit? Even if it meant risking everything?

This is an outrageous, unvarnished, white-knuckle journey to the dark heart of an intoxicating world - from someone who survived the game and then blew it all wide open.

A Rarity

Gary, whether knowingly or not, creates a sense of always being close the edge. It seems his success was born out of being contradictory to the market and his peers. Not necessarily because he wanted to be contradictory, but because he didn’t feel obliged to ‘get in line’. He told that story very well, the story that you need to see the truth about inequality and poverty, and he’s got it into the public domain. And that’s a rarity.

Great book and well read. And thank you Gary.

One man’s rollercoaster ride through high finance and a declining global economy.

A great book which tells a fascinating story which could act as modern morality tale. How avarice, luck and talent can take someone from a humble background to the top of one of the high earning world of short term interest rate trading in the foreign exchange arm of a major investment bank. When he arrives all that glitters is not gold and the work and it’s effects take their toll on his physical and mental health. The motivations revealed at the end of the book are more complex and layered than the reader might expect and author probably knew at the time.

An eye opening book on the dark side of stock trading.

I really enjoyed this intense and personal story. It's very well written and enjoyed hearing it from the author himself. I would highly recommend this fascinating audiobook

Great story

Love the story and how Gary expressed it. Good example of anybody can become anything they want. This is to Gary I don’t think you are smart, you are just lucky.
