About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
Luke Skywalker and Lando Calrissian return in this essential novel set between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.
The Empire is dead. Nearly two decades on from the Battle of Endor, the tattered remnants of Palpatine's forces have fled to the farthest reaches of the galaxy. But for the heroes of the New Republic, danger and loss are ever-present companions, even in this newly forged era of peace.
Jedi Master Luke Skywalker is haunted by visions of the dark side, foretelling an ominous secret growing somewhere in the depths of space, on a dead world called Exegol. The disturbance in the Force is undeniable...and Luke's worst fears are confirmed when his old friend Lando Calrissian comes to him with reports of a new Sith menace.
After his daughter was stolen from his arms, Lando searched the stars for any trace of his lost child. But every new rumor only led to dead ends and fading hopes—until he crossed paths with Ochi of Bestoon, a Sith assassin tasked with kidnapping a young girl.
Ochi's true motives remain shrouded to Luke and Lando. For on a junkyard moon, a mysterious envoy of the Sith Eternal has bequeathed a sacred blade to the assassin, promising that it will give him answers to the questions that have haunted him since the Empire fell. In exchange, he must complete a final mission: return to Exegol with the key to the Sith's glorious rebirth—the granddaughter of Darth Sidious himself, Rey.
As Ochi hunts Rey and her parents to the edge of the galaxy, Luke and Lando race into the mystery of the Sith's lingering shadow and aid a young family running for their lives.

Exogol hunt with ancient with throw in.
This book is the Empire Strikes Back to the final film in the Skywalker saga. Yet the taint of the final films diminishes this book. The author does a great job of explaining how Luke has extraordinary powers in the 8th film and helps to set up the 9th. It seems that comic book, tv shows and books do a better job than the films and they try their best to explain or justify the mistakes that have become canon.
I enjoyed the ancient with dimension of the book the most. Reminded me of Old Republic books.

Fills in some gaps with an interesting story
The story gives a lot of backstory to the rise of skywalker but I would not recommend reading it before watching the movie. Nice to follow luke for once and I like all the sith lore.

Everything Explained
Amazing book. Great to hear Lando and Luke's adventures before the final trilogy. The book explains everything.
Another brilliant Star Wars audio book in narration, performance and quality.

Very enjoyable and some key moments
Really enjoyed this one. Stitches together the issues in the sequel movies and links neatly into episode 9. This ought to have been either episode 7/8 but understand why it was not. Very good. Some cool lightsaber fights.

A good enough companion piece to Episode IX,
This might just be my personal preference, but I don't think most Star Wars books need to be as long as they are for the story they're telling. This one has a lot of moving parts and juggles two separate time periods (referred to by the narrator in chapter titles as simply "then" and "now" and does an admirable job in keeping things straight, at no point did I feel like I'd lost the plot. There are also several angles to the plot being enacted by a strong cast of core characters each with their own reasons for being there.
This book also breathes a lot of life into the character of Ochi of Bestoon, giving him a well-realised personality, and contextualising his actions. But it's there I think this book starts to feel less like a story and more like a product to me. Again, this might just be me, but there is no escaping the fact that this book seems largely to exist as a companion piece to the Rise of Skywalker, picking up a lot of the narrative slack of that film. I happen to think the sequels average out to being basically fine, but I do think Rise of Skywalker let the side down a bit. This book doesn't make that film any better, but it does contextualise a lot of that story. However, and this is the problem with prequels in general, this means we already know what the state of affairs ends up being. It's interesting seeing everything take shape, but there is a sense of futility to one of the POV characters that I can't decide is a good or bad thing.
Overall though, I like this book, it was nice to see some stories centred around the sequel era, and I think the universe is richer for it, I don't think it needed to be this long, but I'm glad it exists.

Events leading up to episode seven.
This was a great story to learn about Ray's family. It tells you the event leading up too episode seven. This was a good book showing how two of the main actors grouped together.
