Brilliant writing, narration and storyline
I read this when it first came out, so it was wonderful to revisit this extraordinary story. The narration and characterisation were stunning. In true Ian McKewan style, this story was intriguing, tragic and beautifully paced. Eight and a half hours of indulgent pleasure.

Brilliant reading of enduring love
The book itself is brilliant. The performance of the characters was great it was easy to distinguish who was who. My only note would be that personally I didn’t like the voices given to the female characters. They were a bit sharp and pointed at times which, as a woman I found mildly frustrating. But the range of the reader was fantastic.

Action literature
The novel has quite a lot of action for a "literary" work. Although the characters were interesting, none of them were at all likable, so it was hard to engage on an emotional level. The use of high-brow vocabulary and references were fitting to the protagonist's snobbishness, but also felt like the author showing off. The narration was (suitably) upper-crust, but this meant that, for me, it wasn't terribly pleasing to listen to. The recurring science references appealed to my geekish tendencies.

Full of susprises
As usual, an excellent book. I enjoy Ian McEwan's ability to construct stories that are both captivating and full of interesting insights. The final part is probably the most interesting one from that point of view: bravo once again!

Strange story
Combination of the story - which is weird - and the voices I didn’t enjoy it as much as the other novels -
