Summary

How does a man addicted to routine - a man who flosses his teeth before love-making - cope with the chaos of everyday life? With the loss of his son, the departure of his wife and the arrival of Muriel, a dog trainer from the Meow-Bow dog clinic, Macon's attempts at ordinary life are tragically and comically undone.

A heartfelt novel from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Amateur Marriage and Breathing Lessons, now available as an audiobook.

Perfectly Observed

The wonderful thing about this book is how the characters develop. They start off shadowy & grey & end up rich & full of colour.
I absolutely loved this perfectly observed story of a couple surviving a trauma.

My favourite ever audiobook

Love everything about this. Narrator brilliant. Have listened to it many times in the car, it's like going on a journey with an old friend. The Thanksgiving turkey chapter makes me laugh out loud every time.

What a great listen!

I can't quite remember how I chanced upon this... I've not read anything by Anne Tyler before. I loved this.... quirky, well-paced, a delightful listen.

An excellent observation of life and human behaviour

I was so glad i decided to listen to the accidental tourist. The title was familiar but I had never bothered to read it. I found it a sensitive exploration of life in general and a pedantic and particular man in constant turmoil with his own emotions and life. The ending was surprising and refreshing.

An excellent read

Very entertaining and quite funny in parts. Quirky and original characters but there were a couple of twists in the story concerning relationships that I thought needed bridging, that is, showing the thought processes and decisions the character arrived at that made him change his mind, not jumped over without explanation. However, it was good in the sense that you never quite knew how things were going to turn out.

Superb storytelling

An extraordinary tale, with characters so authentic and relatable. Wonderful writing with Baltimore as charming and frustrating as ever.

The Accidental Tourist

As with all audio books, it’s the narration that makes or breaks the story and Joe Barrett has a great voice for the characters. I laughed out loud.

The character of Muriel

Enjoyable and engrossing this novel is what you would expect from an author of Anne Tyler’s calibre. It has some sharp and witty observations. A thoroughly good read.
