About this listen

Violet Winters once had it all but lost it when her husband was murdered by a criminal madman. During a cold winter night Violet has to leave her warm bed to tell her neighbor to turn the music down. And that's when she meets sinister, scarred, scarily attractive security specialist, Joe Callahan. She wants to deny it, but Violet can't beat back the hunger she feels for Joe so she gives in again and again. Feeling it himself, Joe feeds Vi's hunger, breaking his own rules to keep her in his bed. Even though Violet had only one man in her life, she's sure Joe is giving her the signals and Vi decides she's ready to take a second chance at life and, maybe, love. But Violet doesn't know the dark secrets in Joe's past, secrets so soul-wrenching, they've drained him dry. With nothing left to give, Joe's determined to live his life alone and he breaks Violet's heart. Crushed by Joe's betrayal, Violet comes to terms with the fact that, no matter what signals he gave, Joe was not theirs to win. But Violet's husband's murderer is obsessed with her and heartbreak again haunts the door of the Winters home. When it does Joe is forced to face the knowledge that he can't fight Violet's pull, she's under his skin and filled him full to bursting. Joe needs to win her back and put his life on the line to keep Violet safe. But, having had it all once, can Violet endure losing Joe?

Suspense Sizzles and Scares

I always enjoy the mixture of sweet and dangerous characters that KA writes and this book is the rollercoaster I’ve come to expect from her plots. Great fun.
Highly entertaining with hot bedroom action that was mouth-wateringly intense.
The drama & action kept me sneaking off to listen as often as I could. I’ll be back for more in the series.

Kristen Ashley is playing with my emotions!

This book was so good that I couldn't even keep my emotions out of it. Loved the characters, but I will be honest I wanted to strangle Violet in the beginning because I thought she should guard her heart more but then again she is meant to be as sweet as pie. Joe really upset me in the beginning but as always KA made sure he got his head together. Loved the Winter girls. The family love in this book was EVERYTHING! Loved it! Loved it so much I think I need to be on a beach with a glass of wine to read it again without getting heart palpitations. This story will upset, irritate and make you laugh and cry and it will be worth it.

Excellent - mostly!

This is one of my all-time favourite kindle books, but I did not enjoy the audio version quite so much, probably because with kindle I tend to skim over bits I don’t like!

This book is still an excellent five star read - just a few parts I would rather avoid: The whole mafia/family angle was an overdone stereotypical cliché. Also overdone is a lot of focus on a couple who get their own book later, with an unappealing “H”, who treats his casual sex partner like disposable trash, and treats his future “h” in a similar fashion.

I was also a little uncomfortable with the whole Mike/Cal/Vi love triangle. I appreciate that she was genuinely torn between two very different men, but to date one, spend that night in bed with the other, but then keep dating the former, was a little difficult to stomach. I also found her TSTL actions in the last chapters illogical - she had coped with so much in her life, but suddenly seemed to lose the ability to think rationally and does some really stupid stuff – would she really run out of the house in a t-shirt upon hearing her boyfriend was captured? Not even pause to phone her cop neighbour, use her personal alarm to notify someone, or even put on shoes and grab a coat? Later on, she only actually escaped because another woman was there to guide her - and then only because the bad guy put them in a ground floor room with an unlocked window (seriously?).

For all my criticisms, this is an excellent book, but it is very long and I really think it would be better with deleting some of the superfluous chapters and just focusing on the main characters, particularly in the final chapters, where the climax of the story is observed mainly thru the POV of side characters, and left me feeling I had missed out on what the H and H themselves actually endured.

Great story, some production issues

Favourite book of this series and the narrator has a great voice. Unfortunately, like the previous book on the serious you can hear a lot of random pauses and swallowing. I was still able to listen to it all and enjoyed it, but these were a little off putting. Not to critique the narrator however who has an excellent voice.

Perfectly balanced

I really enjoyed this book. I did not want it to end. Emotionally charged, often leaving me conflicted. I gave to agree that this is probably my favourite Kristen Ashley. What a world she weaves. I want to go back and remind myself where some of the characters have crossed over from other series. Highly recommended if you want a story that you can immerse yourself in.

Horrendous narrator spoils the book

I’m not sure whether the narrator thought she was reading an encyclopaedia or just couldn’t be bothered to put any effort in. The performance was just horrendous. She sounded bored most of the time and at times it was just bizarre. Phrases where the characters actually stated that they were whispering or shouting were all read in the same monotonous tone. She made absolutely no effort whatsoever to distinguish between characters, so much so that you couldn’t tell who was supposed to be speaking. Even supposedly tough cops or gangsters all sounded girly. It was such a shame as the plot was, as with almost all KA’s books, really good. What a relief that the next book in the series is read by a different narrator!
