About this listen
London, 1936.
Inside the spectacular Grand Ballroom of the exclusive Buckingham Hotel, the rich and powerful, politicians, film stars, even royalty rub shoulders with Raymond de Guise and his troupe of talented dancers from all around the world, who must enchant them, captivate them and sweep away their cares. Accustomed to waltzing with the highest of society, Raymond knows a secret from his past could threaten all he holds dear.
Nancy Nettleton, new chambermaid at the Buckingham, finds hotel life a struggle after leaving her small hometown. She dreams of joining the dancers on the ballroom floor as she watches, unseen, from behind plush curtains and discreet doors. She soon discovers everyone at the Buckingham - guests and staff alike - has something to hide....
The storm clouds of war are gathering, and beneath the glitz and glamour of the ballroom lurks an irresistible world of scandal and secrets.
Let's dance....
Perfect for fans of Downton Abbey, Mr Selfridge, The Halcyon and Belgravia. The master entertainer brings us his fabulous debut novel. Prepare to be swept off your feet....

A brilliant tale
Full of intrigue and romance, One Enchanted Evening has me captivated from the start, and I’ve listened to it solidly, unable to put it down. Anton Du Beke has proven that he is truly the master of all talents. A must read for fans of romance, and of dancing.

Not my usual sort of reading
Took a while to get into but enjoyed listening. Not as predictable as some books worth listening too/ reading.

Very sumptious historical fiction
I guess most people know who Anton Du Beke is, the 'king of the ballroom'. I enjoy (most) of his antics on Strictly, but wasn't sure what the book would bring. I do love historical books so I thought I'd give it a go. It was a very nice surprise. The story is well written, lots of historical details. I am glad he didn't narrate it himself though, I think it would have lost a lot of the luster.
It's a sumptious book with lots of vivid descriptions of the hotel, the costumes and the dances, but it's also about the people behind the dancers. Their lives, their loves, their losses. I'd say, give it a go!

1930s Dirty Dancing
I lovely gentle upstairs downstairs tale, set around the Grand Ballroom.
it's a very English version of Dirty Dancing with heroes and villains, secrets and intrigue. I loved it.

A good story, well performed
A good story, excellently written and well performed by Julian Ovenden. I only hope we return to the hotel again in future books as it feels there’s so many more stories to be told!

So entertaining
I was pleasantly surprised by Anton's imagination and writing skills. He is one of my favourite SCD professionals and I could imagine him Raymond. I loved the web of deceit and bribery that unfolded. And yet, for us optimistic folk who love a happy ending, he delivers.
The only issue was the audible setup. No chapters, no showing how much of the book was remaining.

Enjoyable read
Really enjoyed this book. Giving an insight into a hotel in the 1930s. The only comment I would make is regarding the narrator who read the story well but the constant swallowing was a distraction. I’m not sure if the narrator was a bit too close to the microphone. Other than that a thoroughly interesting book.
