Summary

Part-memoir, part-manifesto, Advocate demonstrates how we can all be a voice for change in an increasingly divided world

Lennina Ofori is a force of nature. A teen mother, a supportive older sister, a PhD student, a support system, a working woman, a survivor, above all, she is an Advocate. She has spent her life working for those who do not have a voice, for those relegated to the margins, and in this audiobook, she lends her voice to them.

Starting with her own life story, from her beautiful family, to her hardest struggles, Ofori opens the door to intersections that are familiar to many: race, class and gender, and uses her expertise to explain and embolden listeners to make active change in their own lives. Utilising expertise from across the globe, from the teachings of bell hooks to government reports, Ofori makes accessible topics that are so often ignored. From her unique perspective as a Black woman who has lived many lives, Ofori is a daring voice for change, and a voice for hope, in modern life.

Advocate is a tale of personal resistance, but also a manifesto for action. With great candour, wit and beautiful language, Ofori will call you to make change not just for your own sake, but for those in the margins.

Strong debut

This book has been well-written and personally relatable. I love how Lennina told her story whilst retrospectively analysing her history and growth. Enjoyable story telling and I also felt nostalgic and tearful at times being reminded how difficult it can be for young women to be pushed aside with no voice. This book is a reminder to speak up and do not be afraid to be heard.

Fantastic…so much admiration. A must read

So bold, so well articulated and well positioned in a positive and uplifting tone. I felt proud listening to Lennina hold her ground and get her point across respectfully…I loved it!

The use of vocabulary is fantastic. The snip it of her life story thus far is inspiring, familiar and sounds like a lot of fun. Lennina deserves so much recognition for all of her amazing work and contributions. The amount of books, authors and organisations acknowledged, advocated for and referenced, the multitude of topics and priorities referenced, the narrative to which they’ve been covered and sharing of facts and stats…10/10👌🏾👏🏾
I’ve recommended it to family and friends and bought my sister a copy!

How to be an Advocate

Lennina Ofori produces a book, that is both personal and knowledgeable.

Her book talks about societal margins and her experiences within them. She takes us on her journey, how she overcame them and her commitment to helping others move forward with their lives regardless of their start.

I would add that Lenninas insight and expertise on young people and young adults, was particularly useful as a parent and really insightful!

Ofori may not have lived the life of some, but she tells the story of many within the global majority and the resilience, support and guidance that is required to overcome some of the challenges faced.

Ofori guides us in an emphatic, relatable and at times academic way, which makes this a particularly useful and an interesting addition to this story and how the chapters ended with thoughtful conclusions.

This book is for anyone who wants to be heard and support others be heard and seen!

Lennina helps us look at ways, we can use our voice and how we can become an advocate for ourselves and others.

This is a truly wonderful book, that will help many, truly make a difference!
