About this listen
A breakout book on the ever-expanding concept of family
Carrie and David Grant have an extraordinary family story to tell. They have four children, one of whom is adopted, and all have come with a curveball: mental health challenges, neurodivergence, trans non-binary identities, various sexualities, and they are a mixed-race family, too.
It is a reflection of the fact that society is changing faster than most of us can keep up with. The wider concepts of family and community are being deconstructed. There are those who are desperately clinging to the old and those who are desperate for the new to be accepted. How do we hold our families and communities together in unity? How do we create a society where all are included and none are oppressed?
In A Very Modern Family, Carrie and David share their challenges and discoveries of growing and shapeshifting to create an incredible, diverse family and community. With their multi-intersectional family, they share their own mindset changes and insights into how to construct a new, accepting and unified space, while providing a deep dive into real life, frequently encountered situations and pertinent, applicable advice.
A Very Modern Family is an important guide for our times - full of pain, change and hope.

Outstanding
Honest, a true real life reflection of parenting, and of parenting SEND children. Told with emotion and compassion. This should be compulsory reading for all LA SEND staff!

Brave, honest and inspiring
The Grant family tell their story with such honesty that I found it a deeply moving, thought provoking book to listen to. Unfortunately the challenges they have faced as parents to neurodivergent children are not uncommon. I found the documentation of their personal growth to be the parents their children need to be inspiring. I thank you for sharing your strength to give hope and light to others.

A worthwhile read for all members of society, not just parents
An insightful book. Thanks for sharing your experiences and learnings. I don't have children myself, I found it moving to hear af your experiences. Helpful to understand challenges that families can face. I learnt a lot of useful things, which helped me understand this fast changing world. I loved the tone and clear intensions to help others that motivate you both - thank you for writing this book

Love the messy, real loving family story
What I liked about this book, was the authenticity that shone through. As a mum to 4 ranging from 31 to 7, all different I have had to shape shift as a parent, learning new things along the way. I am so thankful for this book. As a mum to a child going through assessment currently, it has given me courage to fight again!

inspiring, relatable and a real eye opener
This is the 1st audio book I have ever listened to and I am so glad I did. It was wonderful to hear Carrie and David share their stories so beautifully.
The quality of the recording was excellent and their voices are both soothingly familiar and uplifting.
To hear a range of their experiences as individuals and as a family was engaging and enlightening. The book throws light on a range of topics. At the heart of it is their strong sense of hope and drive for inclusivity and acceptance for all. An amazing book, I highly recommend it to everyone

Very relatable.
I really like the way they told their story in a 'what worked for us' way, giving me a number of areas to think about when parenting my two adopted neurodiverse kids.
It's refreshing to hear someone actually speak out to say that there isn't enough support for parents, instead of the 'oh you just have to be kind to them, and everything will work out'.
Loved this book, even though it made me cry in places - I'm working towards being as understanding as the Grants. Just wish we could sit and chat about it over a coffee with them!!

Fascinating and practical read full of hope for parents and anyone working with children and young people.
There are books about parenting. There are books about parenting specific identities. However this book celebrates intersectionality, family, community and isn’t afraid to face the very real struggles of bringing up kids with authenticity, candour and hope. I learnt lots about things that weren’t in my lived experience without feeling judged - there are clear explanations of concepts and terms woven through their story. This isn’t just a book for parents but a great introduction for teachers, youth workers, friends and wider community for supporting children or young people. I imagine it will be a lifeline for some who are navigating neurodivergence/mental health/sexuality/race/gender and feel like no one understands. Such a compassionate and considered book.
