Summary

Everyone deserves a second chance – or at least that's what ex-vicar Lionel Lawrence believes when he decides to open up the old rectory to a stream of young offenders. Lionel only wants to help these poor souls, but his good deed quickly spirals into a deadly mix of blackmail and murder.

Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby is sure he knows who is behind the disappearance of Lionel's latest young charge. Will this elusive suspect prove to be the incarnation of evil itself?

"Not drowning, Troy, but drowning."

Having really enjoyed the earlier TV series of Midsummer Murders which. deservedly had world-wide success but failing to relate to the more recent episodes, I decided to try the original stories by Caroline Graham. What a delight. Easy to read, great characters, very evocative of time and place and not a bad story although it seemed to conclude rather abruptly. John Hopkins narrated with great ting, and different voices for each character. The Barnaby voice and phrasing is so very much like that of John Nettles he was immediately visible I side my head. In fact, Nettles introduced this, the 6th book of the series, expressing his personal enjoyment of these books.

Can be read as a stand alone.
Recommended.

Really enjoyed this one

Enjoyed this a lot. Probably the best so far (I’ve read them all). The story itself flowed rather more evenly and quickly. The narration is perfect.

Aargh Sergeant Troy!!

Never sure what is the best order to tackle dramatisation versus reading the original book, but after already having watched just about every episode on TV - it is sometimes challenging to take on board some of the descriptions and characteristics of the characters as they have been portrayed on screen. However the filling out of plot lines and finer details of the characters in the books is excellent (and I get that you can't commit every line to a performance) Most of the differences I can cope with - but Sergeant Troy - whoa! - I just want to shout at him, and find myself wishing Barnaby would smack him down a bit more often! Narration is faultless.

Another cracker

A bit unusual this one, insofar as it has never been adapted for tv.
The characters in the novels are grittier than the TV incarnations, and this story is probably "a bit much" for pre-watershed cosy viewing.
Nevertheless excellent audio.

Absolutely brilliant. My first Midsommer Murder. Best book I’ve listened to for quite a while. Wonderfully written and superb, artful narration. I shall be recommending this to my friends and family and looking for more from this author and narrator. Excellent stuff!!

Excellent

Tried not to listen to this all at once but became so engrossed couldn’t stop myself. All the classic Midsomer Murders themes but characters so well depicted they really came to life . Great listen. Am even beginning to warm to Troy xx
