About this listen

A mysterious figure. A whispering community. A deadly secret…

When Stina and Jack move to an old rural cottage, they’re hoping for a fresh start. Their new home is run-down compared to their neighbour’s, but generous Mrs Barley quickly becomes a friend.

Until Stina sees a mysterious figure in the widow’s garden, and her happy new life begins to unravel. And when she hears strange noises in the night, she is forced to question if Mrs Barley is what she seems.

Why do the other villagers whisper about her? Why is she so eager to help the couple? And what is she hiding in her picture-perfect home?

A haunting, twisty story about the power of secrets and rumours, perfect for fans of Ruth Ware’s The Turn of the Key and Lucy Atkins’s Magpie Lane.

suspense builds up...

At first this book seemed a bit slow, but the story and build up of the suspense and mystery was really wonderful.

had to skip a few chapters

overall it was a pleasant story with a degree of intrigue. Some of the back story was a bit tiresome and had to skip a chapter here and there. The accents were good. overall it was not a bad book

We are constantly led up and down the garden path…

The narrator is absolutely ideal for this wide ranging, deep and many layered story. She has a perfect style of reading especially as she doesn’t try to speak as a man, just tells the tale. Her young voice is a breath of fresh air and she carries off the excellent dialogue and prose which is almost Jane Austen like at times, quaintly old fashioned, which fits with a child brought up by an elderly aunt; always coping marvellously with the fluent, wide vocabulary.

The story is one long about turn with suppositions up ended and a sea of red herrings. At times heavy in domestic detail, l but never without good reason. I loved it once I was reeled in and amazed by the truths that eventually emerged. One to be absorbed in and will live with you for a while after. Only a single query why was the cottage sometimes Whisper Cottage and other times Wisteria Cottage?

Good read

I liked this book, lots of twists but the some ends untied. No explanation to one death and various other things
